Push to charge Scientologists

September 06, 2007

BRUSSELS: A Belgian prosecutor has recommended the US-based Church of Scientology stand trial for fraud and extortion, following a 10-year investigation that concluded the group should be labelled a criminal organisation.

Ha ha! About time too!

Quote:
Belgium, Germany and other European countries have been criticised by the US State Department for labelling Scientology as a cult or sect and enacting laws to restrict its operations.

The German Government considers Scientology a commercial enterprise that takes advantage of vulnerable people.

You don't say!

Here's a great piece of satire from The Onion (2005):
Quote:

Scientology Losing Ground To New Fictionology

LOS ANGELESAccording to a report released Monday by the American Institute of Religions, the Church of Scientology, once one of the fastest-growing religious organizations in the U.S., is steadily losing members to the much newer religion Fictionology.

"Unlike Scientology, which is based on empirically verifiable scientific tenets, Fictionology's central principles are essentially fairy tales with no connection to reality," the AIR report read. "In short, Fictionology offers its followers a mythical belief system free from the cumbersome scientific method to which Scientology is hidebound."

Created in 2003 by self-proclaimed messiah Bud Don Ellroy, Fictionology's principles were first outlined in the self-help paperback Imaginetics: The New Pipe-Dream Of Modern Mental Make-Believe.

Isn't the only difference between Scientology and the orthodox churches just a matter of degree in how upfront they are about being a scam?

I can accept the state banning a specific religious behavior (tossing virgins into volcanoes) but not the idea of banning a whole religion. Freedom of conscience means letting me believe in something just as stupid as what you believe in.

I'm no fan of organised religion but I think scientology is much more dangerous. They operate like a cult, breaking someones personality down and basically taking all their money. You have to pay to go up the levels and attain new knowledge whereas you can basically walk into a church anywhere.

They also have dangerous beliefs about mental illnesses although i suppose that could be compared to the catholic condom thing..

Anyway the way they consume people totally into their cult and extract their money would make them more dangerous in my eyes.
They also have some disturbing practices which are outlined on this page below.

They've physically restrained people from leaving the grounds, once resulting in someone's death (sick and starved). Don't know how often that happens at a convent. Plus the equipment they use, the E-meter, to measure (audit) your 'spiritual distress' is such crap. Even people who answer all the 'correct' answers have been told they need spiritual counseling. I'm sure there's comparable things that happen in other religions but that's the basis of suckering people into their religion.

But I think telling a two-year old that there is an invisible guy watching all the time and if you don't mind me this invisible guy is going to pull out your fingernails and do assorted other nasty things to you is along these same lines.

I think it is a fine line but it is one that scientology crosses. They strip the life and assets from its members. i don't think you can say the same things about most mainstream religions.
