Try Gunja or Konkuk University on the north side of the river, or any of the stations north of them.

I lived in the basement of a villa in Nonhyeon-dong close to Hakdong station, and the area is not worth the extra money.

Don't forget the 150-200,000won extra you'll pay on top of the 850,000 just for living in an Officetel.

Find a nice place in a villa somewhere north of the river, with no building fees, and that will be just as clean, safe and secure.

Gangnam is the pits.

It's ridiculous! Nearsubway.com is a total rip! At oneroom.com, I'm looking at officetels for 400,000 won + 50,000 management fee in the Gangnam area. Sure, I'm putting down 10 million won in key money, but still, some of these places are pretty nice. And here I was thinking I'd have to spend twice the amount just to get a decent pad in Gangnam.

I don't have to live in Gangnam but it would be nice to not have to commute to work.

A few words of advice...the oneroom websites will often show pictures from larger units in the building (e.g. post pictures of 30+pyung apartments but pass them off as the 18pyung).
Also, the prices they advertise are only available if there are any units available. They will often quote prices that are lower than the actual rental price to lure you to come to their agency.
In general, I find Korean real estate websites misleading.
Best thing to do is to make a personal visit to one of the ubiquitous real estate agencies in the area you desire to live in. Try a few as they sometimes have different listings.
Finally, particularly for officetels, the advertised pyung dimensions are larger than you actually get in the apartment as they include part of the hallway and parking spot as part of the total pyung size. So, if you see an 18 pyung officetel, it will probably be more like 12 or 13pyung.
