This arrived this morning:
Dear **** *******
Welcome to Korea
I am KIM BYEONG GU, the Chief of Chang Nyeong police station. I am responsible for the local safety in Chang Nyeong where you are living. I would like to thank you for your interest in Korea.
Chuseok, one of the biggest Korean national holidays, is coming soon. During this holiday, people come together and share pleasant times with their families and relatives. I hope you have a great time with your close friends, even though you are far away from your country.
I understand the difficulties you may encounter as a guest in our country. Your good friends, the Kyeongnam National Police are willing to help you with any difficulties you may have including crime victimization, human rights violation and so on. Please do not hesitate to contact us concerning any of these matters.
Please accept our best wishes, and we hope you enjoy your stay in Korea.
Chief of Chang Nyeong Police Station.
Now I'm terrified. What does this mean? Is there some sort of traditional Chuseok foreigner lynching over the next few days? Violations? What kind of vilolations? Personal violations? Will I be gang raped? |

My guess is that the Chief figured that many foreigners probably stay at home during the Chusok holiday and would appreciate it if you notified them in the event that you notice anything out of the ordinary. My guess is that with so many people traveling away from home during this vacation, quite a few homes will get burglarized.
That and maybe they worry about suicides. Many suicides occur during holidays.
Or maybe they are just being nice. |

A friendly letter from the police saying they are on your side? You're complaining because...?
Heck, I'd think it's pretty sweet knowing that should anything happen, they won't do the foreigner brush-off.
If it were me, I'd seriously consider going to the police station, letter in hand, and bring them all a cake or some fruit as a thank you for their letter. I doubt most people would go to thank the guy, but from some of the horror stories I've read on here about how police completely ignore foreigners and their sides of the story on anything, it sounds like you may have lucked out! |

yeah, a cake or some fruit or an envelope filled with cash money....that will ensure they look the other way when they find you are having group sex with korean women, or smoking the ganj, or have a fake degree |

Or start the letter with "I know what you've been doing! See you in one week" Good way to rid yourself of a few enemies or just arseholes. Totally illegal by the way.
I think Arthur Conan Doyle did something similar to a few of his friends and one fled never to be heard of again. (probably a myth though) |

It's a trick, he's just making sure you are in so he can burst through your door, test you for drugs, look at your fake degree, and make sure there are no korean girls hidden away in your cupboard |

Straight up. It arrived this morning.
I'm kind of viewing it as a get out of jail free card and plan to carry on my person at all times just in case. |
