There are alot of those school teacher types who think lifes ambition is to advise the world when its not asked for or needed.Id goodfella him myself.Its really rude doing that.But then again I dont ride the subway and I dont allow people in my taxi who I dont know.Those types prey on the weak and unexpected.Tell those types to move on quickly and forcefully.Everybody do yourself a favor too find yourself some Korean goodfella friends to handle those problems for you or to back you up.Let the Korean bad guys deal with Korean nuisance ,wannabees.Its the best justice.

I think you did fine Toby. The guy was looking for a confrontation... and you minimized it.

The truth is though.. your looking for an answer that you won't like. He really didn't have a good reason to do what he did. He's ignorant, not because of his opinions, but because of his avenue of sharing them with you.

A racist is a racist, period. No need to appologize for them. You will not be able to explain or rationalize them as they are not based in rational thought.

Austin must be Korean. In that context his comments make sense.

Funny thing in Korea is, that whenever you have a bad experience in Korea, Koreans have a set store of apologetics (you dont understand korean history, you dont understand korean culture, etc).

It is not a matter of me agreeing or disagreeing with what "that" man or any other man did or might do. The fact is that it happened, and the only thing that we can control is how we decide to react!

If you are seeking to fuel the situation, fine, do it your way. However, I like to defuse and avoid potential conflicts by stroking other people's egos and sensibilities. Therefore, I would not have engaged in questionable behavior in pubic in the first place. In the rare event that I may offend another person by my behavior, I will certainly offer up an apology and gracefully appease the person that I upset.

I do not see capitulating as a weakness, because by living the way I choose, I remain in control.

By stroking the stranger's ego, I am the one that is actually doing the manipulating. However, if he is able to get me to "react," I have "lost," as he was able to knock me out of my center.

I see that as a polite apology and also straight out telling him that you dont intend to be a verbal punching bag. What do you think of this sentence and what you you advise foreigners to say in Korean?

I've never even been nearly attacked in Korea. For all it's faults I think it's a very safe place to live. One of the main reasons I stay here in fact.

Have heard a lot of reasons why people are prejudiced.

1. Being a member of what you think is an exclusive group, and looking down your nose at everyone else not in your group.

2. Having a need to assert your importance in a dominant ethnic group by treating others in another ethnic group as inferiors.

3. Not being able to accept the behaviour and culture of another race, because it's so foreign to your own.

4. Certain personalities particularly authoritarian personalities are very prone to being prejudiced.

Am sure there are a lot of reasons people are racist too.

1. It's maybe a result of negative sterotypes.

2. Part of ones culture to look down on certain other races.

3. Could be an inability to deal with conditions that one is not familiar with . End result is to treat the annoying condition with disdain.

May be other reasons people are racist. Any more ideas please share.

This is to Toby(met IRL) though others may read it of course. I've had few minor incidents in my time in Korea. Very minor and thats a reason why I'm here.

Korea is catching up with the rest of the world. But that fact is no excuse for the BS you had to put up with the other day.

Apologists for this ridiculous, racist behaviour should just go and take a long walk of a short pierre'.



I had a similar subway experience recently. I care deeply and plan to marry my gf soon.

An idiot ajoshi accosted us and told everyone how bad us weygooks are! FYI you can find it on another thread here so I wont go into the sad details of the affair. Me and the future missus are fine, and the ajoshi just made a bit of a fool of himself really.

Most Korean people are fine, friendly folks. There are a few arseholes though! It wont deter me from using the subway as it is a cheap and efficient way of getting around.
