It's no longer alleged now that those Americans have confessed, been convicted and sentenced.

That smells highly of guilt to me.

How can you read that story, written and published by the American army, in which the soldiers confess their guilt in court, pay damages and take up the bible to demonstrate their contrition and good intentions ... and then all you've got to say is, "Koreans embellish their stories to get more money"?

Agreed. What an absurd OP.

The sentence was quite lenient in my view.

Make no mistake this was a car jacking.

Ten thousand is basic personal injury coverage in the US.

I would hope the US will move to have them placed in a US military prison to serve their time.

I can see 7-Up's new commercial now: "7-Up. Keeping you cool. In Korea. In court!"

Note: I posted a link on the Korea Bridge job advice forum to the Stars & Stripes article before this thread was posted. In that thread, I mentioned that I really wish Korea would ban these "apology payments." The decision of how much the compensatory damages are should be up to the judge, not the victim and certainly not the offender. Korea has made a small step in that already. It's illegal for a Korean police officer to accept apology money.

That's not what the Status of Forces Agreement provides. While in custody in Korea, their Commanding Officer must ensure periodic visits from representatives of the command, to include (if I recall correctly) a military Chaplain, to check on their welfare and morale. The incarcerated individuals are also permitted to receive Western meals and a few other benefits. Once they are paroled or have completed their sentences, the US military will return them to the United States for separation from the Armed Forces.

I remember when I was in Cebu in the Philippines a bunch of Korean students beat up and robbed a taxi driver there.

And a Korean was arrested for smoking in a cab.

Just like we all know American GI's are all perfect angels who are never violent?

I'm an American and I fully support GI's. However, I know that some of them are just kids who's only option left in life was to join the military. Its those few kids that give a bad name/reputation to the US Armed Forces.

Koreans embellishing to get more money?? How about a woman who gets millions of dollars cuz her hot Mcdonald's coffee burned her. Or the smoker who swears he had no idea cigarettes were bad for him getting millions. Or a judge who wants millions of dollars for a missing pair of pants in a dry cleaning store.

I guess its only Koreans that embellish stories to get more money. Its an isolated cultural/genetic trait that is only linked to Koreans. Thanks for reminding all of us what we already know OP.

What's the Prisoner's Dilemma in game theory say they should have done?

They should not have beaten the crap out of a taxi driver. Hence, they would not face a prisoner's dilemma in the first place is my answer.

I followed this story from the beginning. It was never a "beating". The korean police and prosecutor came out with that version. The korean could not even recall who it was that hit him so the whole thing is questionable.

"The taxi driver initially told police that Carpenter hit him, but later changed his statement, the South Korean judge said."
