A win against Syria and this group is all but won, especially if Bahrain drop points in Uzbekistan.
Have to say, Korea has been lucky with the draw. Group A has Iraq, Australia, North Korea and Lebanon while Group C has Japan, Saudi Arabia, Qatar (who are the current Asian Champions in the u-23 category) and Vietnam. |

Fixtures:
12 Sep 07
Uzbekistan 1-2 Bahrain
Korea 1-0 Syria
17 Oct 07

However, it looks like Bahrain are not giving up. Two of their remaining matches are at home so they probably pick up more points there which will probably mean that the final match v Korea in Seoul will be the decider.

The last international match of any significance will take place in Ansan, (Ansan Wa~ Stadium) on Wednesday 21st at 8pm. South Korea will take on Bahrain in the decisive match of the qualifiers for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.
Korea has produced some dull football during the Olympic qualifiers but Bahrain have been pretty decent away from home in the qualifiers and with everything to play for this may not be as bad a match as it looked originally when the draw was announced.
Korea has to avoid a loss (kind of like England v Croatia couple hours alter). A win for Bahrain and its bye bye Korea and Bahrain will be one of three teams representing Asia at the next Olympics.
Code: |
1.South Korea 5 3 2 0 4- 1 11
2.Bahrain 5 3 1 1 7- 4 10
3.Syria 5 0 3 2 2- 4 3
4.Uzbekistan 4 0 2 3 2- 6 2
17-11-07 Tashkent Uzbekistan 0-0 South Korea
17-11-07 Manama Bahrain 1-1 Syria
21-11-07 Ansan South Korea - Bahrain
21-11-07 Aleppo Syria - Uzbekistan

Isn't there a wildcard or other additional slot that those who don't win their pool compete for?

is that a Hiddink coached team? Over Asian Cup champ Iraq and North Korea? That is an accomplishment.

So that means no other chance for Saudi Arabia to qualify except through Japan? Yikes. |

No. The current system allows only the group winners to make the finals (at least in Asia).

He started coaching Russia towards the end of 2006. He was actually very close to taking the Russians to the European championship finals, ahead of England, but they (the Russians) self-destroyed while playing Israel on Saturday. As a result, the destiny of the group is back in Englands hands, though Russians will still qualify if the English lose to Croatia at home (not likely but certainly possible) on Wednesday.
As for Australia, it fairly decent achievement, given that the Iraqis were the semi-finalists at the last Olympic games (though this perhaps shows how little other confederations care about the Olympic tournament when compared to the Asian one). That said, Australia making this far is still a decent performance.

Yes. The betting mans money is certainly on Japan. |

Details of the Olympic Qualifier decider between South Korea and Bahrain.
Korea v Bahrain
(Wed, 21 Nov. 8pm, Ansan, @ Ansan Wa~)
Also, an article about the match:
Day of Truth
This Korea Times article is quite critical of the style of play employed by the Koreans but truth is, they a draw will be enough for them. |

Korea did it but it was another terribly dull performance. Their attack is unbelievably woeful but somehow their manage to grind out the result needed to take them to major tournaments. Here is an interesting fact pointed out by Holyjoe in the ROKfootball forum:
Quote: |
Well, they did it... another 0-0 draw tonight and that's them through.
Manager Park Sung-hwa is getting it in the neck from fans though... 351 minutes since they last scored a goal, seemingly.
If one considers the recent list of matches at full and U23 level stretching back to the Asian Cup, it doesn't reflect too well on the forward lines. On the plus side, just the one defeat during normal time (excluding the Asian Cup shootouts)...
0-0: U23 v Bahrain
0-0: U23 v Uzbekistan
0-0: U23 v Syria
1-0: U23 v Syria
1-0: U23 v Bahrain
0-0: U23 v Qatar
2-1: U23 v Uzbekistan
0-0: KNT v Japan
0-0: KNT v Iraq
0-0: KNT v Iran
1-0: KNT v Indonesia
1-2: KNT v Bahrain
1-1: KNT v Saudi Arabia
Senol Gunes can be proud of his influence on Korean football already.

Australia and Japan are the other two teams to qualify for the Olympics from the AFC zone.
In Australias case, a very impressive run of results as they managed to eliminate Iran and Iraq on the way. Iraq, it should be pointed out, made the semi-finals at Athens Games in 2004. |

I'm all for getting rid of soccer in the Olympics, not to mention basketball and a host of other sports that ALREADY have their own world championships.
I hear the soccer competition in the Olympics is limited to under 23 and a few veterans over that age. Like anyone cares about Olympic soccer compared to the continental and world championships. |

Soccer puts more bums on seats than most other events at the olympics.
This in turn makes the IOC more money so while the olympics is meant to be about the amatuer ideal, it is also about making money nowdays so soccer won't be going anywhere anytime soon and the professionalism will be tolerated....
That is the reason why IOC wanted soccer to be included in olympic competition...
Also it is restricted to U23(with a couple over-aged players) because FIFA doesn't want to detract from its main event, the World Cup so they have formed a happy partnership... |

2008 fixtures
List of matches the South Korean national team will play in 2008:
February 6th: Turkmenistan (h) - World Cup qualification
February 17th: China (Chonqing, China) - East Asian Championship
February 20th: North Korea (Chonqing, China) - East Asian Championship
February 23th: Japan (Chonqing, China) - East Asian Championship
March 26th: North Korea (a) - World Cup qualification
June 2nd: Jordan (h) - World Cup qualification
June 7th: Jordan (a) - World Cup qualification
June 14th: Turkmenistan (a) - World Cup qualification
June 22nd: North Korea (h) - World Cup qualification
h- home (Korea)
a- away
If Korea survives this set of qualifiers (they should, as they only need to finish in the top-2 in this group (other teams: Nth Korea, Jordan, Turmenistan)) they will qualify for the final round of World Cup qualifiers where they will meet slightly bigger fish (Australia, Japan, Iran etc.).
Matches to take place between 15 October 2008 and 9 September 2009, which probably means two more matches in 2008.
Top-4 in Asia qualify for the World Cup, 5th placed team will play the Oceania champion (most likely New Zealand) for the final spot at the World Cup. |

Ah, the World Cup. Well, let the madness begin (although this is a low key set of fixtures in the first half of 2008 no doubt the Koreans will assume that six wins out of six are a given well maybe the matches v North Korea will be of some interest though).
When the final rounds starts in the second half of the year, things should be more interesting. If Korea ends up in a group with Japan and Australia, qualification might become a bit of a challenge.
