A win against Syria and this group is all but won, especially if Bahrain drop points in Uzbekistan.

Have to say, Korea has been lucky with the draw. Group A has Iraq, Australia, North Korea and Lebanon while Group C has Japan, Saudi Arabia, Qatar (who are the current Asian Champions in the u-23 category) and Vietnam.

Olympic Team
Fixtures:
12 Sep 07
Uzbekistan 1-2 Bahrain
Korea 1-0 Syria

17 Oct 07
Bahrain - Uzbekistan
Syria - Korea Republic

However, it looks like Bahrain are not giving up. Two of their remaining matches are at home so they probably pick up more points there which will probably mean that the final match v Korea in Seoul will be the decider.

The last international match of any significance will take place in Ansan, (Ansan Wa~ Stadium) on Wednesday 21st at 8pm. South Korea will take on Bahrain in the decisive match of the qualifiers for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.

Korea has produced some dull football during the Olympic qualifiers but Bahrain have been pretty decent away from home in the qualifiers and with everything to play for this may not be as bad a match as it looked originally when the draw was announced.

Korea has to avoid a loss (kind of like England v Croatia couple hours alter). A win for Bahrain and its bye bye Korea and Bahrain will be one of three teams representing Asia at the next Olympics.

Code:

1.South Korea       5  3  2  0  4- 1 11
2.Bahrain           5  3  1  1  7- 4 10
3.Syria             5  0  3  2  2- 4  3
4.Uzbekistan        4  0  2  3  2- 6  2

17-11-07 Tashkent        Uzbekistan     0-0 South Korea
17-11-07 Manama          Bahrain        1-1 Syria
21-11-07 Ansan           South Korea     -  Bahrain
21-11-07 Aleppo          Syria           -  Uzbekistan

Oh, and Australia have one foot in the door as well..

Code:

Australia  20  Iraq
Lebanon  12  North Korea

November 21, 2007
Iraq    Lebanon
North Korea    Australia

Australia.......5 3-2-0..6:0...11
Iraq............5 2-2-1..7:2....8
North Korea.....5 1-1-3..2:5....4
Lebanon.........5 1-1-3..2:10...4

And Japan are also on the verge of qualifying:

Code:

Group C
Japan...........5 3-1-1..7:2...10
Saudi Arabia....5 2-2-1..5:3....8
Qatar...........5 2-1-2..5:5....7
Vietnam.........5 0-2-3..2:9....2

Vietnam  04  Japan
Saudi Arabia  21  Qatar

November 21, 2007
Japan    Saudi Arabia
Qatar    Vietnam

Isn't there a wildcard or other additional slot that those who don't win their pool compete for?

is that a Hiddink coached team? Over Asian Cup champ Iraq and North Korea? That is an accomplishment.

So that means no other chance for Saudi Arabia to qualify except through Japan? Yikes.

No. The current system allows only the group winners to make the finals (at least in Asia).

He started coaching Russia towards the end of 2006. He was actually very close to taking the Russians to the European championship finals, ahead of England, but they (the Russians) self-destroyed while playing Israel on Saturday. As a result, the destiny of the group is back in Englands hands, though Russians will still qualify if the English lose to Croatia at home (not likely but certainly possible) on Wednesday.

As for Australia, it fairly decent achievement, given that the Iraqis were the semi-finalists at the last Olympic games (though this perhaps shows how little other confederations care about the Olympic tournament when compared to the Asian one). That said, Australia making this far is still a decent performance.
