I got several different spam ads for personal ads. I clicked on a few because some of the people looked like some foreign teachers I knew. It turns out they were. Now here is the twist to it, first the ads were adult oriented including some with not so good pics, in addition they were updated with their korean cities not their home cities. I strongly urge foreign teachers to refrain from posting these ads not only because we are here as guests and want to be professional for this country but who knows how the province may take it if it is found out. Just a note all the ads I saw were definitely foreigners but did not know if all were english teachers, public or private. Rolling Eyes

umm you know those most likely are not real ads. websites can tell what country/city you're in by your ip number. just some nude pictures with "hot members in <insert your city here>" slapped across them.

Some of the ads were definitely real. They were foreign teachers I knew. I think you need to read more carefully.

Sometimes you can join one singles site, post a normal photo of you smiling, and other sites will copy/paste it, or someone else will copy/paste it onto another and create an ID for it. Seen it happen to another teacher.

If the photo is of them nude or doing some odd thing, then that's a little difficult to explain, though.

I think the OP's suggestions are words for the wise. I also think there is potential for entrapment of one sort or another. In the environment we are working in here now, I do not think you can be too careful.

Then, you sometimes have people doing it to other people as a joke. When I first came to Korea, my friends back home thought it was funny to sign me up to a couple of dating sites without my knowledge. That was until I started getting endless emails from 40 year old ajummas wanting to get laid.

It was funny at first but I had to stop using that email address as the emails wouldn't stop (I was surprised at how many I got) and I didn't have the password to cancel it. My mates didn't have a naked pic of me up there though but it was one of me wearing only shorts on the beach.

We can be entrapped which is another reason we should not post those ads.

I'm a little confused.
Are you saying that we should not post a picture in ANY singles dating website or that we should not post ANY ad in ANY dating site, or that we should not post ANY nude or sexually suggestive photos on any dating site, especially an adult site (like AdultFriendFinder)?

or hey, how about this one?

do whatever you want that isn't illegal. in the end, only really annoying and lame people are going to care.

doesn't "mind your own damned business" hold any weight anymore? some people like to get laid. nothing against that in the korean constitution.

Im 100% with you uber! What a load of BS!! The single act of putting your photo up on one of these sites along with an ad doesnt harm anyone else insofar as direct effect. I know, someone is going to reply by saying "but when ESL teachers get on and do this, it harms all of us here in Korea by hurting our reputations". Well, to you who say that, I tell you in advance you are a bunch of shallow, nit-witted losers who have been stuck in Korea so long you're turning into one of these people. If you want to be here so bad to save money or be with your Korean wife you're willing to force other people to give up their human rights, you aren't even worthy of the poo I stepped in on the way home tonight.

Its very much a privacy issue. As long as Korea is a country that allows free speech, there is no reason not do this or anything similar if you so desire. I am not just a guest here. I pay taxes to their pathetic government and provide a useful service to their community by doing the work I do. Therefore, I should be entitled to the same rights and privileges. If they can't provide that, we should all take a hint and leave them alone to wallow in their narrow minded xenophobia together as a silly borg-like community. Remember, Korea made laws to allow us to come and reside here so they can learn English from us. They're going to have to allow us to really reside there, then... in ways that exceed legal ones, such as not being prejudiced toward us in believing that all FTs are pervs because some put harmless ads up on Adult sites!

As long as love motels stand and girlie cards litter the streets throughout the land, there is no moral or ethical ground to stand on when crticizing a person's choice to legally place a personal ad, nude, provocatively, or conservatively positioned and dressed. There is no need to kowtow to the idea that an example should be set by refusing to join such sites. If people don't like them, they can either avoid them or petition their government to shut them down.

I agree completely but privacy as we know it does not exist. Their perception of privacy is completely different. I have damn near exploded as my medical checks were sent to my school last time and not to my attention. Apparently it was the fodder for afternoon conversation. My weight was discussed and there was a note about me having to come back to have my blood pressure checked because I have white coat syndrome. (blood pressure goes crazy as soon as a doctors or nurses are around)

I was absolutely infuriated. The next time I insisted they be sent to me I took a copy and then took to the nurses office and was very adamant that since I was fine there was no reason for these records to be shown to anyone. The nurse could confirm I had no health problems. The nurse was confused but agreed and whether they complied I don't know but I do know I didn't hear anything about my health check that year.

They have absolutely no concept of privacy from the government to the pizza delivery guy. I can't tell you how many times they try the open the door if I don't answer as quick as they would like. I once came home from school and needed to use the "ladies" and forgot to lock the door behind me. I heard the door open and some Korean carrying on about gas and when I shot out from the bathroom this woman had walked in and onto my balcony to check the gas. I was so mad I could barely speak. In my bad Korean I told her never come in my house again.

It is beyond me why it is okay to just walk into a persons house if they don't answer the door quickly enough. Had the churchy folks do this too. Rattle the door knob when I don't answer. I have one of the CCTV things so I can see who is at my door.

After 7 years it is one of the things that I still struggle with, the complete and total lack respect for privacy and personal boundaries.

I agree about the lack of respect for privacy. Another symptom of a country with 1st world money but 3rd world social mentality -- at least when you're talking about a tendency to just walk into someone's home after you knock and they're not there. (that's happened to me before, too).

I assume you bring this up because you are saying that in Korea, privacy is not important for anyone, including other Koreans. And in many cases -- namely cases in which invading ones privacy will not cause that person to potentially lose face -- that is correct.

But what makes this different is how, if it is true we should not submit to these websites because it will hurt the reputations of all teachers here, the damage to those reputations comes as a result of discrimination against us because we are not Koreans. Notice, you see plenty of Korean people using those very same sites.. Dont believe me? Look for yourself : www.adultfriendfinder.com ... and plenty of Koreans go to the 2 barber shop pole places and hire da bang girls and prostitutes. No one seems to question that or invade those peoples privacy in those cases. Why would they need to make a stranger lose face for something that doesnt affect them personally? But when a foreign guy is having a mere conversation on a subway with a Korean woman, all the people on their pathetic nationalistic whim suddenly jump up and shout that foreign guys are immoral and bad because they sleep around too much!

So to make it clear, we are talking about discriminatory invasion of privacy when we claim teachers should not submit to these sites.

In Korea, there really is no need to waste your time with those "adult" ads. Even if you're like me and you've never had luck with the girls back in the States, you can go to a train station in Korea and for about 50,000 Won get some action with a pretty girl.
