You have to weigh off making coin vs having a good experience.

Invariably making good cash does not go hand in hand with being in a friendly country.

The United Arab Emirates is a good choice. Its pretty Kafir friendly. If you live in Dubai there are tons of bars. Its no problem drinking there. The moneys good. You make about the same as Korea. They provide nice spacious housing. Lots of great Indian restaurants. A big expat scene with a lot of crazy drunk Brits. Lots of Russian hookers too.

The pay sucks, but the hours are mostly low and the students were wonderful. The Thai administrators are illogical jackasses, but you get that everywhere. One of the best years of my life.

Thinking about there....

The money's low but is that low by Western standards?....
Can you live comfortably from what you make?

I was making 30k baht a month, and no, it was not enough to live on. Add to the fact that inflation went up 20% in the time I was there and it's even worse. But I didn't care because my life was significantly better than when I was in Korea.

In some ways its better than Korea and in some ways its worse. The one thing that gets to you is the Endless "Inshalla's" whenever you need to get something done. The Visa process is insane. I ended up walking around without a passport for three months becouse it took so long to process the visa.

Teaching high school kids is a nightmare. They are extremly badly behaved and they cheat on all their exams. There's something in Arabic I believe they call it Hafta. meaning knowing someone who can help you out. Whatever you do don't try to get a kid expelled His parence will call the local sheik and you'll be in deep %^$.

The food is way better.

Depends on your definition of "live comfortably." My wife and I lived in the Northeast on 25,000 baht a month. We went out on Friday nights, ate in restaurants three or four nights a week, stayed home a lot too, rented videos, sat on the couch and drank beer with the neighbors. Couldn't save anything, but enjoyed a comfortable, relaxed lifestyle.

Here's a pretty good comparison between living and teaching in Korea and living and teaching in Vietnam-

I notice that one of the posters in that thread recently became rather infamous on this board.

Teaching in the U.S. is a bad idea. I was friends at my Uni with three people that went on to become teachers. All three of them say it was a mistake, and they are all very different people. One taught H.S. history and said it was like banging his head against the wall all day, every day. One taught grade school, and between all the supplies she had to buy and the low pay she couldn't afford her rent.

I have one friend still teaching. She teaches third grade at a public school. Her husband is a lawyer, and just made junior partner. She also has to buy stuff for her classes, but she can afford it. Her main complaint, she spends about an hour a day supervising the passing of meds to the various students. The school day is only 7 hours long.

The U.S. is going down the tubes, and one of the main reasons is the backwards nature of our school system. Teachers don't teach, they are babysitters and wardens. I would not teach in the U.S. Ever.

from what I have heard of Dubai...it seems to be a very liberal city so I think you can wear whatever you want. I would LOVE a job there. I saw one job where you got a driver and $2,000...

You can wear whatever you want. I'm not sure about driving. If you tought there you would only be allowed to teach all girls schools.
The dress code for women is similar to Egypt. No full hijabs are expected however its wise to dress modestly.

You have to cover your skin ( arms/legs ) except your face.

I wonder how a spandex flesh-colored suit would go over in a place like Egypt? You're covering your body...
