I'm a little confused about the last sentence in that quote from the immigration service website. What does this mean: "E2 visa holders invited by the Minister of Education don't need to submit criminal record check when you apply for extension of stay at immigration office"???
Who exactly has been invited by the Minister of Education? Public school teachers?
And what happened to Seoulsucker and his BIG meeting with those government big-wigs he was supposed to be reporting back on...? |
I got the same impression...did PS teachers have to submit a criminal check when they first applied? |

December 15th, 2007. That's way too hasty to implement big changes. Maybe it not only has to do with making an example out of foreign teachers as a result of bad events in September and October, but maybe the Korean government is looking to clean up the hagwon private academy scene by forcing schools to shut down by limiting the number of foreign teachers. This will force hagwons to play fair with the foreign teachers Korea gets and force them to follow labor and immigration laws. The government did announce recently that all these new changes do include crackdowns on hagwons. I think Korea does want to correct the hagwon situation and they will do it by limiting the supply of foreign teachers to them as well as increasing control regulation and oversight. |
Aye, I am starting to think this has a lot to do with hagwons. I don't think I will have to go through too much hassle renewing at a public school. |

wrong. i teach at a university, but i have to deal with it. An E-2 is an E-2, regardless of where you work. Immigration won't make any distinction. |

Har! Optimism is cute.
What it's going to do is force them to find new ways to cut corners and cheat the teachers out of money. It's also going to force them to pay more bribes to get the local immigration office to look the other way on those guys of tourist visas they hired. And it sure ain't going to be them paying for the visa processing. |

This will not affect hogwans in any severely negative way, nor will it force them to pay higher salaries.... What it WILL do is force all foreigners to have to go through recruiters. Because hogwans will not want to deal with the new complicated visa issues, they will simply never renew a contract, instead hiring a recruiter 2-3 months in advance to have a fresh dancing monkey as soon as the outgoing primate's contract is up. Recruiters will do what they do, and get as many gullible newbies to come as are needed.
It will severely cripple everyone's 'leverage' at work, because hogwon directors will know that the foreigner will not stay next year, so they will be more encouraged to cheat, hold back salaries, break contract details, give sub-standard housing, and generally exploit the foreigner as much as they want. There will be no motivation to keep the foreigner happy.
And, the hogwans that hire illegally will just have more reason to do so. If they can't hire someone legally with the current system, how much more trouble do you think they will have with the new laws?
And you know that Greasy "Mr Kim the Hogwon Owner" is not willing to give up his black Eqqus and his shiny faux-gangster suits just to comply with immigration laws. He will simply ignore the laws and continue pretending to actually work. |

OH SO HAPPY
HAPPY HAPPY JOY JOY
I just got renewed/extended yesterday, with out having to submit anything other than my contractual stuff.
If you have your renewal or extension paperwork, I'd recommend going to immigration ASAP. Just go try and see what happens. That is what I did and it worked. If you don't have your paperwork, try getting your paperwork ASAP |

you can do this only if your visa will expire within the next two months. that's what I was told. |

What did you need for your renewal? It's been a while since I've renewed. I think it's the contract, your alien card, and passport, right? No more pics? Thanks. |

Here is what I brought: contract, alien card, cetificate of employment (this came from my uni), and passport. They did not need another pic because
my alien card still has the same one and you keep your original card. They simply make a mark on the back of the alien card stating the new extension dates. One thing though....my extension is valid until November 30 2008 (a year later to the date I renewed) which is shorter
than it was initially (this is because I renewed so early.)

Yes, that is right. I went in at 75 days before (15 days earlier than the two month rule). They did it reluctantly and gave me grief and called my employer. In the end though..it worked out That is why I am suggesting going now.
I can not say that this will work in everyones case. The officer seemed to be really nice and also seemed to be in a good mood.
On that note-if the immigration officer gets treated with a lot of respect, this helps. Be extremely nice with out attitude. If they say no at first, simply try talking with them with out any hard feelings or yelling. Believe me, this niceness goes a long way. Here is another tactic you could try if they do not want to renew you this early: start crying and explain how much you love Korea and simply can not bear to leave this wonderful country.
Seriously though, if you are renewing, just get your paperwork together ASAP and go and see what happens. It can not hurt to try! |

anyone know what counts for the criminal background check in America? I am in the state of Michigan, and was referred to the state police for a check, which take about 3 months, and the FBI check is even longer.
Im supposed to head back at the end of dec, and dont want to deal with having to come back after one year if I dont have to. Anyone have any thoughts? |

It will be MORE complicated to hire a new foreigner than to renew the contract.
they will simply never renew a contract, instead hiring a recruiter 2-3 months in advance to have a fresh dancing monkey as soon as the outgoing primate's contract is up. Recruiters will do what they do, and get as many gullible newbies to come as are needed.
Have you even been reading the thread? The new laws will make it HARDER for people to come over, not easier. The amount of paperwork and time required, not mention the legwork will turn many people off. They can't get enough warm bodies as it stands right now...recruiters can only get people who express an interest.
No. It will be HARDER to get a replacement, not easier.
And, the hogwans that hire illegally will just have more reason to do so. If they can't hire someone legally with the current system, how much more trouble do you think they will have with the new laws?
That may be...but who cares? The hakwons that hire illegally are likely to screw the illegal teacher over...but since illegal teachers are in large part responsible for these new regulations, it serves them right. They deserve each other. But once the stories get out, less and less people are going to take the chance of working illegally, which hopefully in the end will result in these owners closing shop
And you know that Greasy "Mr Kim the Hogwon Owner" is not willing to give up his black Eqqus and his shiny faux-gangster suits just to comply with immigration laws. He will simply ignore the laws and continue pretending to actually work. |

So December 15th, does that mean the 14th is the last day they take applications in the Seoul immigration office, or the last day I could get the visa in a Japan visa run? Anybody know?
Also, does anyone know about time taken to get the visa in Tokyo? |

I would like to know if anyone has heard what the Korean government's going to do with the criminal check. Is there going to be a complete no tolerance for anything on the record? or Will they only be looking for major violations?
I am a bit worried as I have a misdemeanor on my record from a youthful indiscretion. I'm just hoping I'm not SOL as I've gotten a good job lined up for next year. |
