An early 'Happy Hanukkah' to everyone, especially the Koreans responsible for these childish and insecure cartoons. Check the link below...(props to a Marmot's reader)

Anyway

"Baruch atah Adonai, Eloheinu melech ha-olam, asher kid'shanu b'mitzvotav v'tzivanu l'hadlik neir chanukah."

L'chaim!

And a happy holidays to all. Very Happy

Anti-Israel does not equal anti-Jew. The most reasonable Jewish people I know are vociferous critics of Israeli policy, just as they (and I) also speak loudly against US policy.

I think insecure is right. When I tell my students I don't celebrate X-mas, but am Jewish, they don't really know what that means except that Jews are supposed to be smart and good at business. There's a Hagwon in our city called, "Star of David". Jewishness, for Korea, seems to be equated with financial and academic success. Maybe that's only a few steps away from "money-grubbing". This is only one of many weird, ignorant theories that humans make up about the "other". It makes me cringe, but I think it would be healthier to shrug it off.

On antisemitism in Korea:
One of my students said to me, a glint in her tiny little eye, "teacher, I saw "Piano' movie, and you are Juden."
"What do you mean? I look like the famous actor, Adrian Brody?"
"What? No...you look smart and ugly, and you like music. Kind teacher! You are Juden! Ha ha ha."

I'm not even Jewish, but that cartoon, I must say, makes me want to beat people up really badly.

Certainly. But those series of comics (this is fairly old news actually) weren't about the state of Israel. They were about how "the jews" in the USA were keeping Koreans in the USA down.

Loada crap.

My question: What does Korea have to be anti-semitic about?
Israel is no where near Korea, so how can Korea be influenced by their policies other than to try to poke fun at the US- which is very funky because it comes at the expense of a religion or a culture that has nothing to do with Korea.....
As for Koreans being kept down by the jewish community in the US.........The Korean community keeps themselves down by staying to themselves and not integrating into American society

Yeah, Korea is a "hallmark of tolerance"........... Confused

I've heard Koreans compare themselves to Jews and it is supposed to be flattering to Koreans (but is arguably very unflattering to Jews Laughing ).

I can't remember exactly, but I think strong identity, oppression and the nation-state winning in the modern time were reasons for the comparison. Oh, and smart, of course. Laughing So, who are the Korean equivalents of Einstein and Marx exactly?

Koreans often seek comparisons with European people. I've heard the Japanese referred to as like the English (colonizers) and China (and Chinese) like the Roman Empire and Latin respectively.

I do not believe for one second there is a significant anti-semitic feeling in Korea.

Yeah, I was responding more to the over-the-top commentary on the blog in the OP's link.

Did you actually look at the cartoons? They're primarily anti-Jew.

While the comics themselves are pretty depressing, how can you take a blog seriously that says this:
Quote:
The experience the South Koreans have of the Jews is completely non-existent, so why this growing hatred?

We can think of two reasons:
1) The lunatic left
2) Extremist Islam

This is precisely what happens when the money of the extremists, their lunacy and the lies of left-wingers are allowed to spread unchallenged.

The lunatic left wing of Korea is responsible for this? Rrrrrright.

Kind of reminds me of the Family Guy episode "When You Wish Upon a Weinstein." Of course, in Korea most people who want upward mobility and good fortunes convert to Christianity.

I read an essay once, probably posted on here, where a Korean was arguing that Koreans should learn from the Jews in order to achieve success abroad. Yeah right, the Korean Occupational Government.
