so i rented hanibal, anxiously waiting the "let's eat his brainy brain" scene. Much to my chagrin, it was blobbed...i mean, enough was implicit.....what the hell could i have really missed?

I actually found the "blobbed" brain-eating scene more disturbing than if I watched it for the first time and could see everything. For me, what's implied is often worse than what's really there.
And as for Resevoir Dogs being edited in Korea, I believe the only scene that's deleted is the part where Michael Madsen's character (is it Mr. Blond?) cuts off the police officer's ear and starts speaking into it. The part where he cuts the ear off is still intact ( pan away: another scene where less is more), but they deleted the part where he's actually holding the ear and speaking into it. Just thought I'd clarify. At least that's how it was when I rented it last year. |

what about "Monsters Ball"? Has it come out here? Saw it the states then when it hit Bangkok the papers there were clamoring for the uncut version. Do they want to see Billy Bob?
Did see the Koreanized versions of "Pulp Fiction" and "Resevior Dogs" man the Koreans butchered them thats why I ordered the videos from the US and had them sent.
Now if I ever teach kids again I can teach them colors using "Resevior Dogs" |

Yeah, Pulp Fiction is one of the greatest movies of all time but don't rent it here...you will be sorely disappointed. I believe that they also cut out the "Jimmy" scene..y'know, "Dead*&^%% storage". At least they did with the version that I rented here. |

I saw "Monster's Ball" last week and I was surprised that certain parts were not snipped (ouch! wrong word ...). I think more was shown that is common in Korean porn.
Uh, not that The Bobster ever watches Korean porn ... I mean to say what others have told me about Korean porn. Like that degenerate Beckerson, for instance ...

I was watching Basic Instinct on OCN (I think) and they showed most of the sex scene between Douglas and Stone, the only part they cut was when she picked up the ice pick and freed him from the bed with it. I thought it was a strange cut. Sex is okay, but an ice pick isn't (there wasn't any violence in that scene). I guess it was for time, but it was a strange cut. |

No, "Basic Instinct" on OCN has been heavily cut. However, the "Basic Instinct" DVD sold in Korea is uncut. |

Speaking of DVDs, are they usually uncensored here? |

I'm guessing they didn't want the women here to get any ideas.
Korean porn makes me giggle. It's so ridiculous! They dub the girls' voices with squeaking puppies! The guys all wear the same pair of underwear, and they're all two-pump chumps. |

I don't know if this is true or not, but I remember hearing a while back worries that British censors would cut out the octopus eating scene in "Old Boy." |

I love some of the English to Korean translations:
English: Get yo biatch ass out of here before I fucking *beep* you with this pistol you oozy biatch!
Korean: ga!
(Part of the problem is Korean requires a lot of characters on the screen. Direct translations tend to be very wordy. There's a rule in English to Korean subtitles that only so many words can appear on the screen at any one time. So odd cuts have to be made.) |

Mindmetoo, all things being equal, it's a far sight easier, quicker, and takes up less screen space going English to hangul than the other direction. It does require workaround after workaround when dealing with language-specific or culture-specific humour & such, though. But by and large, bad hangul subtitling is less a result of inherent problems or limitations in hangul (which is by far more compact than English) than in simply bad, underpaid, or unqualified subtitlers.
Yes, there are standard rules governing number of characters/lines per frame, as well as seconds on screen for each bit of dialogue, but these are not religiously adhered to in many hangul to English subtitling efforts. You should never, for example, see three lines of text at a time, though you often will.
My favourite is when the ajumma is screaming non-stop, running her mouth a mile a minute for, oh, 15~20 seconds, ranting & raving about this & that --- you glance down at the English subtitle, and it says...... "No he didn't." |

Saw Ocean's Twelve last week and noticed that they had silenced the 'F' words on the few occasions they were used (by Don Cheadle's character). WTF? I've never seen that before in Korea? I've seen sex and violence cut out, but never had language bleeped. |

The zotto/1060 tv shows are totally different. Like a talk show with real sex at the end. Uncut, natural, real. I don't waste my time with bad porn in the west, why would I here? |

I rented Pulp Fiction one night recently to watch with my girlfriend. I know that movie by heart, and everything was uncut, including the foot massage scene. Maybe I saw a re-released version?
Anyway, my girlfriend only liked the scene where they dance in the restaurant... |

DVDs are often censored.
They cut the scene from Mel Gibson's "Braveheart" which shows the princess walking down the hall, happy about being pregnant and in love with Mel's character, but not the sex scene (not that it showed much anyway).
Hmmm.... wife impregnated by a foreigner!
Gosh forbid a woman should be happy about something like that! |
