If you are watching sports, playing video games and watch tv in a primarily darker environment go Plasma. Lcd is more expensive in the US/CAN and its only real advantage is brightness.

Your parents won't notice the difference. Go with whatever's on sale. However, I would suggest going with a name brand that backs up it's products.

buying in Canada.

Panasonic seems to be the cheapest brand around. Parents wont be gaming or anything, it'll be just for watching TV and movies.

I'd lean toward LCD. You might get a little better contrast on a plasma screen, but the old models had a very short lifespan, and I'm not sure if I believe that the new ones will last as long as they're claiming. Also more flexible; if you ever do want to hook up a computer or something, LCDs usually work better for it.

P.S.
Lighter and more durable too.

My brother in law bought a plasma. He questioned the tech guys at Best Buys and they said that plasmas produce a noticeable shadow effect on dark colors... making those hues seem less clear, compared to LCD.

Plasma all the way.

Panasonic models are very good and have a lifespan of around 20 years.
