Gangwon Epik apparently doesn't hire over 55.

As far as having/enforcing employment laws, Korea doesn't take this too seriously. My wife was rejected at several jobs because she was married--they told her that she was well qualified, but they didn't want to worry about the possibility of pregnancy. Made me a bit upset, but not having the forethought to conceal a tape recorder during the job interview, there wasn't much to be done. Even if we had, would you really want to work for a new employer you had just taken legal action against? I'm sure everyone would make you feel real welcome! (My wife finally found someone willing to hire her, but she quit after working without being paid for three months.)

If you feel it's your calling to fight the system, more power to you. May you be richly rewarded you for your glorious martyrdom . . . .

Lets imagine a true advertisement by the majority of employers in Korea shall we?

Not the greatest job! Over-zealous management that prefers entertainers to teachers. Don't bother grading, everyone must pass!

Description:

Here at Honestyfirst we strive to lie to our parents about your lack of experience in order to capitalize on tuition. We don't really intend to give you training and plan to throw you to the wolves the second you get here. Here, we always put education last so long as you can make our not so great students like you.

Honestyfirst is located in a polluted area that will shorten your lifespan. There are many things to do near our location but you may be too stressed out to do much by the end of your week. We will also ask you about your smoking and drinking preferences despite being drunkards and having at least a pack a day mentality ourselves.

Qualifications:
Warm body.
Well, a white warm body that is not too old, fat and/or unnatractive. No bearded men should apply either.

Teaching Conditions:
Well, we'll lie a little to you here so why bother. Let's just say you will work your backside off. Then we'll criticize you every chance we get.

Salary:
We will pay you sometimes, so long as we have gotten everything we wanted in our lives first. Remember, you get paid before the Korean teachers. That should be good enough for you even if it is fives months late.

Hours:
Whatever we can get out of you. We'd leave you there to run midnight classes if we could but since your white... we can't trust you by yourself and we need sleep.

Benefits:
We'll pretend to pay your pension and hope you don't notice.

3 sickdays -You'll be sick a lot more, trust us... but we'll make you work.

Airfare - We pay this only because we hope you don't wake up and realize you're getting screwed and cancel the flight. Someone started doing this first and we cannot get teachers unless we do it too. It sucks.

Medical - We'll delay this as long as possible until you complain too much.

Bonus - Haha, unless we think the parents will complain too much if we fire you before your contract is up don't expect to last 12 months... we'll find a way to get out of this bonus thing.

In a case of lightning striking twice, I actually agree with Homer here. Many a times I apply for a nice job online or somewhere just to get no reply, and then see the ad crop up a few days later with 'female only' added to it. It sucks, but I wouldn't have wasted my time had I seen it before.

This is just something that has to be accepted. Korea wants the power and wealth of a western country, but none of the responsibilities. PC culture doesn't exist here, and probably won't for a long time.
