For a 2 or 3 day side trip, it is worth it.
It takes about an hour by jetfoil or fast cat.
The cost is around 20k - 30k won (one way) depending on time of day and ferry company.
You can catch it from the airport, from the kowloon side or on the hongkong side of the harbor.
There are the 2 American casino/hotels as well as a dozen or so of the older Chinese ones. Hotel rates vary widely.
The old fort, maritime museum, and a couple of the temples are worth the visit. I also like grabbing a mini-bus over to Coloane and Taipa for the day as well.
Lorcha (over by the maritime museum) is a great restaurant but you have to reserve a day in advance to get a seat, especially on the weekends. There are also lots of other decent restaurants.
Macau itself is a nice blend of the old Portugese and Chinese architecture if you are interested in such things. There is also some great discount shopping in the market up by the border crossing into the mainland.
You can also get some decent deals on jewelry (with government backed guarantees re: quality and weight). |

There are ferries that run all day and night. I think there are about 20 departures daily from each side.
They are just about hourly during the day, every 2 hours or so at night
plus the ones that leave from the kowloon side (over by the marco polo hotel) and the 4 daily trips to/from the airport.

| Macau's a great day trip. You don't need to spend longer; it's a tiny place. As for the ferries, if you're at all prone to motion sickness, dose yourself with the appropriate medication before you leave. The water can be choppy. Last time I came back to HK from Macau I got horribly sick. |

| It is also fun just to wonder around Macau's backstreets. Lots of interesting buildings, history, sights and sounds. Go, you wont regret your time there. |

Macau was nice, but when you get off the ferry, watch out for con artists who tell you you have to have a guide for sight-seeing. No, you don't. You can just walk out the taxi queue.
I was there for just a few hours, and I was in the area by the ruins of St. Paul. It was nice, but I couldn't find anything to eat other than freaking McDonald's. But at least they had these fruit mango drinks in there. Also, many of the sights are too spread out. |

I don't agree w/a couple of posters that said one day is enough in Macau.
For a place of its size, there are many sights-historical buildings, cemetaries(one of the more interesting places to visit in E. Asia, IMHO), parks, restaurants(some can be pricey), shops, etc. Unlike Zhuhai(just across Macau on the mainland) you don't have to worry about pickpockets. Unlike HK, English is not widely spoken. Neither is Portuguese!
You can easily spend 3 days there. |

| Additionally, you can buy ticket and "massage" packages from many places in HK, if that's your thing... There's a great Portugese restaurant in that main alley street (nice alley with shops, not trash) that has some great chicken. Get there in the evening and watch the "ladies" troll for johns. Macau is a great break from the hustle and bustle of HK. |
