| How on Earth did the Republika ng Pilipinas not clinch the title of Most Corrupt Government on the Face of the Planet? Their embassies and consulates don't even make a pretense of hiding the corruption--they flat out demand the bribes up front. |

How does Singapore (an Asian country) rank up with these Northern/European countries?
I can understand NZ's place, being modelled on Euruope and the Scandanavian welfare ethic - but Singapore. Any ideas? |

* Lee Kuan Yew is no longer in charge, & was no Marcos or Suharto
Allegations of nepotism, because his son Lim Boon Heng is PM, have been made, but Lim Boon Heng WAS elected by the people of Singapore.
* free & open elections, not marred by riots or violence
* The Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau (CPIB) can, & does act.
* 'authoritarian' does not equal corruption
* the government has a clean, corruption-free image. & Singapore has consistently been rated as the least-corrupt country in Asia
* a transparent free market |

| I think I can shed some light on corruption in Singapore, as I wrote a 30 page paper on it during university. It really has nothing to do with being under the British system. Singapore was one of the most corrupt places in Asia up until the early 70's. Basically, through stronger gov't and actually paying it's public servants good wages, they were gradually able to cut out a huge proportion of corruption within their gov't, and is now one of the least corrupt countries in the world. Indonesia and Hong Kong tried to do similar things around the same time with Hong Kong having reasonable success while Indonesia failing miserably. There is more to it than that, but you get the jist. |

Indonesia was Dutch, Indo-China was French, & the Philippines was initially Spanish (& later annexed by the US).
But point taken. Myanmar, India, & Malaysia were also originally modelled on British systems. So were Australia & NZ, for that matter. |

| Oh, I agree that it is based somewhat on the British system. I'm just saying that it has nothing to do with it's corruption level. |

My point was, that there would be less likelihood of Singapore enjoying corruption free status, if Raffles had been Dutch, French or Spanish.
The Westminster system, is arguably superior, to other political models, such as Presidential elections. But like all systems, is still open to abuse. |

I definitely do not agree with that.
The UK, Canada, New Zealand and Australia should be the 4 least corrupt systems in the world if that's the case. Singapore was ultra-corrupt before, and it has nothing to do with Raffles being British that brought about their change. It has to do with Singaporeans, creating change in their own style, regardless of who their colonial masters were. |
