99% of the time i eat out alone and i never have any problems. people dont bat an eyelash at my waygookness.

maybe a lot of you in this topic thread are in areas w/ few foreigners?

the one thing i do notice which really annoys me is that i rarely get kimchi with my meals meanwhile ill look around and see that everyone else, or most other people were given kimchi. maybe the restaurants think that im a tenderfoot foreigner who hates hot food, but i dont know why they would think that if i ordered dok-po-gee or mae-un-tang to start off with? its too bad cause i love kimchi.

Hmm.. I don't recall ever NOT getting kimchi.

One step further.. on non-kimchee items (pizza, spaghetti, etc).. I don't recall ever NOT getting pickles served with it either..

My korean has really been improving in the last few months and for me the main hazard of going out is that now I can hear the guys at nearby tables calling me a filthy foreigner, a monkey, a son of a dog, and her a *beep*, not a real Korean. This has happened three times in the last month, and one time the guys deliberately bumped my girl so hard as they left that she fell out of her seat. It seems to really rile the males up that I'm out eating with a Korean girl.

1) Service is a social event for them. i prefer prompt, professional and impersonal delivery of what I order. Not a long "welcome the waygook to our homeland" reception.

Yeah, people trying to welcome you is a drag.

2) They try to show you how to eat your food properly. If you eat it any other way than the korean way, it causes offence and they rush over to coach you. Hajimaaah!!! I paid for it, i'll eat it how i want to. Its my deal.

Offence or a desire to help?

3)The ajoshhi running the place orders around his female staff as if they were sub- human: offputting. Or, he plays host by coming over and asking you the usual questions "are you married " etc.

1- They do that anyway, your presence is unimportant.
2- Never happened to me.

Quote:
4)They hate to see you drinking from a can or bottle: go to the toilet for a moment, and you will return to find your fizzy drink has been poured and flattened into some plastic cup. Aaaagghhhh!!!!

Because you're drinking it wrong, obviously.

5)Whenever its busy, serving the waegook becomes a distant prospect. Priority no.1 is satisfying the Korean customers- waygook can wait.

Yes yes, all Koreans are racist because they don't wipe your ass for you.

Quote:
6) Sometimes they resent you taking up a table, because foreigners frighten away the customers, and No korean will sit within a mile radius of you.

Yeah, they really hate how you give them money and all of that.

You know, I have no idea where most of you guys keep running into the Korean asshats at. I've only ever had one drunken Korean do something stupid to me, and he was blind drunk, could barely walk, and bounced off the walls after bouncing off of me. He was three apples tall, and if he was trying to start a fight, he had an odd way to go about it, what with him stumbling away from me.

Hey, I went out to eat almost everyday during my sojourn in Korea. I found the service to be excellent, as was the food. And when the people got to know me, it even got better. When informed of my departure, I recieved gifts and free meals. Would this happen anywhere else?

I live in Seoul dude, as you know, and it does seem to be worse than the other two smaller places I lived. What's more I live in a part of Seoul with very few foreigners, go weeks without seeing any in my area so maybe that has something to do with it. In any case these guys don't seem to be into starting fights, it's different from your drunken agoshi experience, they just want to mouth off, and they don't think I understand them. Actually I'm used to it now, so calling it a hazard is maybe exagerating, just thought it was something that should go in this thread. I'm more excited by the fact that I can understand their insults than unnerved by it, heading into my third year it's a bit harder to shock me here!

Some of us don't have a choice. Excuse us for not being as hip and cool and having as many friends as you.

If you want to be a puritan you'll have to stop using heroin. But don't worry, you have supportive friends around who want to help. We'll talk about this and many other things over dinner.

Try going for the status of "Non-Idiot" first. It's actually very easy to achieve.

This one time a vegetarian friend and i went to a galbi restaraunt, and i started trimming some of the excess fat of the meat. THe ajuma came over and took the scissors away from me. Not sure why it mattered to her if i trimmed the fat or not. Maybe she wanted me to die from clogged arteries at an early age?

my friend (who is korean-american) said that she was in a place like that in the states and they brought out meat with a lotta fat. her dad asked for one with less fat and they were like "that's the best part!"
so i guess that's probably what the lady was thinking lol~

Yea, the word of the day is that Koreans love fatty. Fatty meat is good meat. I wouldn't have a clue in the world why, but yea...

No.

Speaking as someone who cares.
