| The best Mexican food I've had in Korea was at Casa Burrito in Cheong-ju. Pretty much everybody I know that tried the grub there said the same. Unfortunatly for Cheong-juians, it's recently been relocated to Pyoung-taek I believe (altho I don't think they officially open shop there for another couple of weeks). |

If you're looking for authenticity, you can try Cusco, which is run by 2 Peruvian chefs and they have various Mexican and South American dishes on their menu.

| Whoever said Chile Relleno....you suck. I have put most Mexican food from my mind, and I haven't even heard of chile relleno (sp?) since I've been here. Now it's all I can think about and I don't get to visit home for another 4 months!! Ghaa! |

It is far from Seoul, but I decided to head down and check the place out a few days ago. We got enchiladas, taquitos, and something that was like softish tacos.
The enchiladas were smothered in salsa verde, which reminded me a lot of Mexican platters in the Mid-Atlantic. The other two dishes used proper beef as opposed to ground beef, and they were damn good.
No burritos for the official dish I use to compare places, but it's definitely better than Bobby's was down there, and I'm kind of jaded about most of the Mexican in Seoul, as it's too dry and I can make better at home. Haven't checked out On the Border yet, but with so many people recommending the crap places in Seoul, I haven't got my hopes set too terribly high. |
On the Border's burritos taste like a cross between Tex-Mex and a microwave burrito. I'd probably put it 70% in favor towards microwave burrito though |

|
|
Every Sunday starting at 5 PM there will be a Mexican fiesta in Haebangchon at Alexandria's Cafe. That place is actually an Egyptian restaurant, but on Sunday it will be all Mexican. The cooks are from Mexico. Every week the menu will be different. Burritos al pastor, tostadas de tinga de pollo and taquitos dorados. Next week will be tacos al pastor (served Mexico city style!).
Corona and Negra Modelo available too.
Lots of Latinos and Americans come. Stop by to practice your Spanish, learn to dance salsa, or just sing along with the mariachi songs. Next week two members of a Mariachi band touring Korea will come and play a few songs.
To get there: It's in Haebangchon, which is about 15 minutes away from Iteawon on foot. The nearest subway station is Noksapyeong Station line 6. Take exit 2 and keep walking straight from the exit. Yongsan army base will be on your left as you walk. You will pass an entrance to the base and the road will fork into two. Keep on the left side. That is called Haebangchon Gil (street). There are kimchi pots there on the left too. Keep walking and you will pass a little store and then see the Mexican flags hanging up outside Alexandria's Cafe.
It's across from Indigos and next to Philly's.

I think the OP is writing about LaCasa. I ate there last year and it was good. They don't list a web site on their card, but the number is 031-668-8259, or a cell 011-9942-3336. The waitress there spoke good English and the food was like what I've had in Mexico, just not a lot of it. About 10,000 for lunch, a couple of enchiladas with rice and beans. Other customers were non-Koreans.
The same people own Chang Pwuck Thai Restaurant and Sawatdee Thai Restaurant, all in the same area.
It's maybe a 10-15 min walk from Songtan station. Quite a haul if coming from Seoul. |

On the Border is totally overpriced (like most family restaurants in Korea) -- most dishes are 12,000W+, plus tax and the taste is far from authentic (I've frequently travelled through all parts of Mexico).
It would be stretch to call it Tex-Mex at all -- yeah, more like a microwave burrito ...
There's far better taste and value around -- e.g. Dos Tacos.

Just bumping this... first of all, very psyched for that Mexican fiesta thing at Alexandria. Right down the street from me, and I'm looking for good eats on a Sunday now that Indigo's is closed on Sunday (SUCKS).
Ha... I am a total Mexican rookie (growing up in New England might be the reason), but I love On The Border. Those buffalo chicken tacos with the crumbled blue cheese and the jalapeno sauce and fried onions... SO good. Anyway, I noticed that the margarita night is coming up. As a big fan of binge eating/drinking, I'm very curious about this. What is the set-up, exactly? Is it buffet style? How easy is it to down tons of drinks? Do you have to hit the bar, or do you have a waiter or what?
How's the food at margarita night? Is there much booze in their drinks? |
