Illegal tutoring is targeted: City of Seoul cracks down on cram schools
The Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education is offering rewards for reports of illegal private tutoring. The office announced Saturday that any ordinary citizen, government or civic group official who reports illegal private tutoring, which proliferates in Seoul's affluent areas, will receive up to 2 million won ($1,700).
The education office said it targets all hagwon operating after 10 p.m. and only those private tutors who receive more than 10 million won per month and do not report their earnings.

How many of the posters at Dave's teaches for 10 million won per month?
Do you earn anywhere near 10 million won/month?
Do you earn even 5 million won/month? |

Real Reality is asking.
I doubt any poster at Dave's makes 10 million won per month legally or illegally.
Most posters do not earn 25 percent of 10 million won per month.
How is it possible to legally earn 10 million won per month?
How is it possible to legally earn 5 million won per month?
According to the article, it is okay to earn 10 million won per month as long as it is reported. |

I'm surprised the figure (10 million) is that high. I don't think it is particularly directed at we foreigners anyway. There is a huge untaxed workforce of private tutors among Koreans in the Gangnam area particuarly. A woman I dated last year made notably more than me and worked less hours just from teaching kids in their houses. She hadn't paid tax in years. These are the people the govt are after I'm sure. |

I know one person who earns about 4 million a month, but he/she works his/her ass off to do it. I am not willing to do it. |

When I tutored in Mokpo, I had one class that was 600,000 won a month for 6 kids and also 400,000 won a month for 2 kids. Most of the time, I was making about 300,000 won a month for the time I had private lessons.
Unless someone is charging a lot of money and working a lot of hours, there is no way anyone could do 10 million won a month. You'd have to work an extra 200 hours a month at 50,000 won (which to me seems the standard going rate for one-on-one tutors in Seoul) to make that kind of money. |

Some do. Usually it is when the teacher gets a cut of the fees paid to the school. In this case your popularity as a teacher is very important, or ability, I never know which one it is in Korea. My ex girlfriend gets a cut of her students fees. Some months she really rakes the money in, but not in the 10 million range, but way more then what I make. I have only seen this deal for Korean teachers, and not a native speaker. Does anybody know differently? |

Koreans teaching TOEIC or TOEFL at cram schools make HUGE bank.
Realize some of these after 10pm hawgwons are operating until 2-3am.
I knew a Korean teacher who would make 5-6mil a month teaching TOEIC at these cram schools.
I'd imagine if you worked constantly you could make 10mil +
Pretty crazy huh? |

In 1995~96, I used to "volunteer" at a cram school in the evenings, and all of the Korean English teachers (that were preparing the high school students) were making five to six million per month without busting their humps (seven days per week, but not over 5~6 hours per day).
Those were the days... |

I wonder if they mean the people who are foreigners that operate illegal hagwons? I know of a guy who does this with his Korean wife. They don't have a hagwon liscense, and he can't legally teach. But.... |

I wish I made 10 mill+ a month. But, then again, I'm not willing to give up more time than I have to nor am I willing to run the risk of getting caught. |

Erm - that's 35 to 42 teaching hours a week. Which in my opinion, is hump-busting, providing you're actually putting some effort into your teaching. |

If the reward was 10mil won, you bet your ass I would be turning people in. 3-4 people and I have practically doubled my salary for the year |

Ok, I make great money, by hagwon standards. But then I saw this in the linked article:
Quote: |
On Saturday, 6,000 presidents of these learning institutes located in Seoul and other areas of the nation held a rally in Yeouido, Seoul. |
Shoooooootttt - had I known that, I would have put on a suit, grabbed some business cards, and gone to Yeouido to meet some folks!!!
Almost like the other article about Gang-nam residents spending 17% of their income per year on private tutoring.
Regards,
Glen |
