I just saw this article from the New York Times magazine section about the benefits of play for children and adults too and I couldn't help but think of how badly some of my students need to just experience some unstructured, creative play. I wish one of the Korean newspapers would do a story on this and bring the issue of overstressed students into the collective consciousness of the country. If there could be an article that dumbed down the content to a more accessible grammar and vocab, it wouldn't hurt Smile

I read the article and as I understood it, it said the purpose and benefits of play are largely unknown and speculative.

I've worked with Korean adults for about 10 of the last 12 years and as far as I can tell, they haven't suffered permanent damage from not being able to play from 3:30 to bedtime. Many of them expressed a wish that they could have, but they seem well-adjusted creative people in spite of not having had the free time we did.
