After sending off Form 8802 and receiving my residency certificate 6166, must I do another IRS form to claim the foreign earned income exemption on my U.S. taxes. I work at a public school under GPOE and my school hasn't been deducting taxes. |
When you file your tax return (normally due April 15, but overseas filers get an automatic extension 'til June 15), you file Form 2555-EZ or 2555 to claim the foreign earned income exemption. This form is filed with your Form 1040 individual income tax return. |
Thanks for your reply.
Is this right: certificate 6166 is merely provided to my Korean public school to confirm my claim that I am exempt from Korean taxes for the first two years? |

Now I've been told they won't give me the certificate, because I don't have proof I wasn't required to file a return in 2006.
I hate the IRS. It took them a year to tell me that. |

Just file a 2006 return. Problem solved. |
