| I'm going to be working as an English teacher in Daegu but would like to live there at least 1 month before working. Can I apply for a travel visa to enter, live, and look for a job in Korea, then after sealing a job, get a visa to work there? |

Have you tried your recruiter? Or the EPIK Website?
I'm about an hour from Daegu. We took the schoolkids to Woobang Towerland last year. You don't have to apply for the 90 day tourist visa. It's granted free on arrival. But you will need to do a visa run to Japan, before you're granted an E2 work visa. You cannot start work in Korea without an E2 visa. |

short answer:
You can come to Korea. You can enter and stay for 30 days (as an American) without a visa. You can look for a job in that time.
You will then (unless you have worked here before on an E2) have to return to the US to complete the interview and E2 visa application part of the process.
You can then return to Korea and start work.
I hope you like long plane rides and be aware that the 1st round trip will be on your nickel.

As long as you have all necessary paperwork, & a job lined up, it should still be possible to do a visa run to Fukuoka, Japan. There's a sticky thread on visa runs to Fukuoka, & people are still going there this year. You will need criminal & medical checks done in the US, before you leave the US. Get certified copies of all documents, too.
EPIK website have a comprehensive list of required docs:

Criminal record check

(If applicable) Proof of teaching/work experience(for details, refer to FAQ)
Copy of citizenship or a copy of legal residence certificate (for Korean nationals)
If you are an ethnic Korean and do not have citizenship but legal residency in a country where English is the primary language, you must be able to provide proof of English education beginning from junior high school level.

| I have NOT heard of any 1st time E2 applicants who have successfully made a visa run to Japan since the new regs came into being. |
