I'm going to be working as an English teacher in Daegu but would like to live there at least 1 month before working. Can I apply for a travel visa to enter, live, and look for a job in Korea, then after sealing a job, get a visa to work there?

Have you tried your recruiter? Or the EPIK Website?

I'm about an hour from Daegu. We took the schoolkids to Woobang Towerland last year. You don't have to apply for the 90 day tourist visa. It's granted free on arrival. But you will need to do a visa run to Japan, before you're granted an E2 work visa. You cannot start work in Korea without an E2 visa.

short answer:

You can come to Korea. You can enter and stay for 30 days (as an American) without a visa. You can look for a job in that time.

You will then (unless you have worked here before on an E2) have to return to the US to complete the interview and E2 visa application part of the process.

You can then return to Korea and start work.

I hope you like long plane rides and be aware that the 1st round trip will be on your nickel.

As long as you have all necessary paperwork, & a job lined up, it should still be possible to do a visa run to Fukuoka, Japan. There's a sticky thread on visa runs to Fukuoka, & people are still going there this year. You will need criminal & medical checks done in the US, before you leave the US. Get certified copies of all documents, too.

EPIK website have a comprehensive list of required docs:

Quote:
All applicants will be required to submit the following documents:

A completed application form (including a passport size photo)
A personal essay(minimum 300 words)
Personal medical assessment
Official medical report
Two sealed recommendation letters (from a professor or a former employer)
A copy of your diploma
* show the original diploma at the Korean Consulate/Embassy
Two original sealed transcripts:
1 sealed transcript sent directly from the university to the office you applied (EPIK office or Korean Consulate/Embassy) or a transcript legalized from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in your home country with an 'Apostille number and the stamp'.
1 sealed transcript to take with you when applying for E2 visa at the Korean Consulate/Embassy.
Criminal record check
* Applicants applying for E2 visa in Canada must have a 'Vulnerable Sector Search' in the criminal record check.
Copy of passport photo page
(If applicable) Copies of certification (teacher certificate, TESOL, etc)
(If applicable) Proof of teaching/work experience(for details, refer to FAQ)
Copy of citizenship or a copy of legal residence certificate (for Korean nationals)
If you are an ethnic Korean and do not have citizenship but legal residency in a country where English is the primary language, you must be able to provide proof of English education beginning from junior high school level.

The application form, personal essay form, and personal medical assessment form can be downloaded from the EPIK website. Click here to view forms .
For detailed instructions on completing your application, refer to the Application Form Instructions.
Before submitting your application package, please check to ensure that you have included all the required documents in order to complete your application. Click here to view a last-minute checklist .

I have NOT heard of any 1st time E2 applicants who have successfully made a visa run to Japan since the new regs came into being.
