Well, let's see.
When one experiences a pattern of noticing that benign threads are deleted, and subsequent mod PMing results in the repeated "I don't know what happened to it" response, then what do you expect?

More PMs?

Really what are you guys afraid of? You have your socks. If you don't like whining posts, you have a lot of other threads to delete.

Shocked

a perfectly innocent thread went west yesterday....the search STILL DONT WORK...swear filter is beeped up..etc etc

the brightest n best have jumped ship,or only drop in now n then, basing themselves elsewhere..

mass migration is going on

Please let us know which error you are getting regarding the swear filter. We've been consulting with Dave on working out the kinks on that. Last I've seen it's almost back to normal (as of a 2-3 weeks ago).

To use the search, go to http://forums.eslcafe.com/korea/search.php. Then select 'search for all terms'. To filter your search results, do the same, but also search by forum. If that fails to yield what you are looking for, try using google using the terms 'eslcafe' and your search keyword.

As for the mass migration estimations, looks like the brightest haven't left, as your detective work and mathematical formulas of user attrition is spot-on.

Who cares? I don't have enough invested in this board to care what the Mods do.

I'd suggest that if you're really bothered about mods removing threads then you're in too deep.

We generally keep threads that stimulate discussion over mod practices and offers feedback on how we can change:
http://forums.eslcafe.com/korea/viewtopic.php?t=117455
http://forums.eslcafe.com/korea/viewtopic.php?t=116938
http://forums.eslcafe.com/korea/viewtopic.php?t=115712

As for being afraid, we're quivering so much that we willingly climbed into the snake pit and started a thread on how to improve the CE forum, which has grown into 7 pages of discussion.

As for our occassional responses of 'we don't know what happened to it', I think its pretty obvious that we are being sincere, given that really tame threads would vanish such as 'where do I catch a bus to Sokcho' and we'd shrug our shoulders, whereas we'd have no problems in saying this or that flame thread was pulled due to XYZ reason citing the TOS.

Anyways, to sum up, you can see by the above links that we do encourage and are not afraid of suggestions on how to improve, if they are legitimately constructive criticisms. But these troll outbreaks get treated like other redundant troll outbreaks of other subject matter. If a user has a legit concern over the whereabouts of their thread, we ask to PM one of us. In the event that you get no PM response after a few days, sure, post a thread to get our attention and we'll look into it.

Is it me or is it my message?

What are the limits?

When is enough - enough?

It is after all called moderation.

The civility thread is cool.

My intent was to hear from the general public concerning the extremes.

Where are you feeling extremed rather than moderated I suppose.

I know you can't please all of the people all of the time.

I think that's were moderation is important.

There's a reason it's not called extremation or radicalation.

If one wishes to moderate then should one be moderate in practice.

Let's not be excessive.

A slower more meaningful approach maybe?

I'm still cool, I like to look at things from both sides.

Hmm..not sure why that's not picking it up. Anyways, the trend of mod opinions is that we are not going to be overly aggressive in going after swears or swear filter dodges, unless they are being used in the form of an insult to another user, race, etc..., rather than said for emphasis, shock, etc...

"What are the limits?"

why not address the issue or respond to questions?

n.b. - tried the 'adult' (?) way and sent pm as suggested - no response

yes, i was given fair notice that - 'you will be warned only once'

but, why not have an open discussion the subject?...again, seems like an 'adult' approach

should a mod be feel entitled to indulge in 'name calling' with impunity, while at the same time empowered to censure others for similar actions?

Why do I have this gut feeling that some of the "mod critics" right here in this thread probably have their own mod socks?

i prefer their socks. their "mod team" tagline exudes a Sneetches feel to and and is as pleasurable as playing against the cops in a wednesday night softball/beer league.

Out of curiosity, what exactly would Dave have to say about problems with the swear filter? I'm guessing it's something along the lines of "Yeah, yeah, deal with it."

His responses to our requests to add/remove swears have amounted to 'Done. Cheers, Dave.' The lingering problems stem from us wanting to add some new words on account of filter dodges. But the filter is buggy, so we asked him to remove the new list of additions. But perhaps he missed some and also accidentantly took out some needed ones. We'll follow-up with him to be sure.
