Cubanlord, I suppose an MSc or MA from the London School of Economics is, um, disreputable?

Perhaps I should have said it differently (oh...and...you aren't comparing the same program; they are different disciplines): a reputable masters program will be above 30 credit hours. I said 2 years because that is the average time for someone to complete a masters (you know, 4 for bachelors and 2 for masters....at least in the US). Obviously, some go more than 6 graduate credit hours and can therefore complete the program faster (such as myself...I will have finished my program by April in a year and a half because I took 9 credit hours a semester).

I just think you're being highly Ameri-centric. There are other ways of doing things, you know.

pyong...pyong...pyong.... Why are you so hung up on how long it takes to complete a program? That is not a quality trait! What you should be focusing your attention on is the amount of worked involved in completing a program and the quality of that work.

While I understand what you are saying, I still, regrettably, have to say that you aren't understanding what I have said. It doesn't matter how fast you can finish the course. What matters is the amount of classes/work one has to do (i.e. credit hours). OF COURSE YOU CAN FINISH A PROGRAM IN A YEAR IF YOU PLOW THROUGH IT! Anyone can. However, the real question comes into play when one looks at a university's program and notices that an MA or MS program is less than 30 credit hours. One must question its rigor and quality (and one way of doing this is by checking to see if the program is accredited by a well-established body). Imagine if a Bachelors degree was only 12 credit hours. Would you say that program is a quality program? I can guarantee that no accrediting body worth its weight in gold would ever credit such an institution that has a Bachelor's degree for only 12 hours or an MA/MS degree under 30 credit hours. There are conventional methods that universities tend to follow for a reason (i.e. requirements to get into a program, program structure, mandatory assignments such as a thesis or research proposal, etc.); they represent quality.

I guess you can say I am being "Ameri-centric". Sure. However these are my perspectives of what constitute quality in an MS/MA program. You can have your own opinions, sure. But have you taken the time to really research what quality is in an online TESOL program like I have? I build my opinions off of experience and research. Off of what are you building your opinions? Conjecture?

You can sit there and slap links to MA/MS TESOL programs all you want. I'm not going to sit there and tell you if they are good or bad because I have not personally researched them. I have researched a couple and can honestly state that if you are going to go back to North America (i.e. Canada and The U.S.) and look for a job with your "new" credentials, then you had best do your research prior to enrolling in a program.

You should read the other thread that Yeremy, myself, and a few others discussed online MA/MS programs. Then perhaps you will have a better understanding of what I am speaking.

Fine, I'm sure that LSE will soon be modeling their graduate programs on Shenandoah State.

Pyong,

There is no reason to get mad. As you have pointed out, there are places other than the US that do things differently. That doesn't mean that they are of lesser quality. I just don't want people to base their definition of quality on how long it can take to finish a program. People should be focusing on more important things such as accreditation, length of program, faculty, the rigors of the courses, how long the program has been "alive", available support for faculty and students, etc.

Yes, good points all.

I personally think the most important question to ask is, "Are you enjoying the course?"

"Top-ranked school" doesn't always equal "satisfied students."

As far as I know you can jump into it anytime, as long as there is room. This semester we're at capacity for the May class. Not sure how things will shape up for the summer though.
