It seems as though China took over the dubious title of world's biggest polluter a year or two ago. With the US economy sagging and the Chinese economy booming, will the environmentalists start putting pressure on the Chinese to clean up?

I see, China has a population of well over about 1.3 billion people against the US's population of about 300 million and you think it's wrong that the Chinese should somehow pollute more than the USA?

| Even the UN said it wasn't fair to put USa and China in the same boat as China is a developing country trying to take people out of poverty. |

| It's my impression the environmentalists put pressure on everyone to clean up their act. |

Well, well....so, its not about the amount of pollutants put in the air, its just about the eeeevil US. Nice. Now I see why the US didn't sign that worthless Kyoto Treaty. |

The Chinese - and the UN - insist that rich countries with high per capita levels of pollution must cut emissions first, and help poorer countries to invest in clean technology.
America's per capita emissions are five to six times higher than China's, even though China has become the top manufacturing economy.
US emissions are still growing too, though much more slowly.
Dr Auffhammer told BBC News that his projections had made an assumption that the Chinese government's recent aggressive energy efficiency programme would fail, as the previous one had failed badly.
"Our figures for emissions growth are truly shocking," he said.
"But there is no sense pointing a finger at the Chinese. They are trying to pull people out of poverty and they clearly need help.
"The only solution is for a massive transfer of technology and wealth from the West."
Sounds like common sense. Who said that the US was evil?? |

The Chinese environmentalists are putting pressure for cleanup efforts in their country. I think there was a thread on it here a few months ago, but search isn't working for me.
I know the Koreans aren't too fond of what's in the Yellow Dust, so they've been making efforts to plant trees in the dust-producing region. |

Well, God bless the Chinese! They're only trying to pull people out of poverty!

Of course....those innocent Chinese only need the West's help and soon they will be out of Third World status. |

| China and India often bring up the point that a great deal of companies from Europe, the US and elsewhere will shift manufacturing overseas to countries like China, and then the emissions count as coming from there. Then the western companies get to pretend that they're cleaner than clean because only the head offices are located there and those don't pollute. I don't know if there are alternate stats that take that into account. |

A reduction in pollution may not be largely blamed on economic output. American manufacturing gains efficiencies all the time. Pollution is, by definition, waste. Old industries might have pollution grandfather clauses and can keep emitting. As they're replaced, new industries have to meet the new code. |
