Report: Netanyahu says 9/11 terror attacks good for Israel

By Haaretz Service and Reuters

Tags: Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu

The Israeli newspaper Ma'ariv on Wednesday reported that Likud leader Benjamin Netanyahu told an audience at Bar Ilan university that the September 11, 2001 terror attacks had been beneficial for Israel.

"We are benefiting from one thing, and that is the attack on the Twin Towers and Pentagon, and the American struggle in Iraq," Ma'ariv quoted the former prime minister as saying. He reportedly added that these events "swung American public opinion in our favor."

Netanyahu reportedly made the comments during a conference at Bar-Ilan University on the division of Jerusalem as part of a peace deal with the Palestinians.

Meanwhile, Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad cast doubt over the veracity of the September 11 attacks Thursday, calling it a pretext to invade Afghanistan and Iraq.

I think Netanyahu might actually be wrong about this.

I'm not an expert on American public opinion, but it does seem to me that most of the rhetoric I've heard along the lines of 'If you're against Al Qaeda you gotta be for Israel" is coming from people who were already hardcore pro-Israeli before 9-11. I haven't heard too many people saying "well, you know, I used to be kind of ambivalent about Israel, but after 9-11 I'm behind them all way".

Of course, a lot of the politicians and media types who are most pro-Israeli are also the most fired-up about the War On Terror and the Iraq war. But I'm not really sure if that proves a causal connection between the two positions.

Just my observations.

What is the fact in this case though? That the Jews blew up the buildings so the US would invade Iraq?

That it is good for Israel, or at least that is what Netanyahu says.

Well, some people point to the fact that many of the neo-cons were Jews with ties to Israel. That is true. Some even had ties to Netanyahu's Likudniks. There is no denying that, but they only helped reinforce the thinking of the neo-cons who were gentiles like Rumsfeld and Cheney.
September 11th, in Netanyahu's view has helped increase more of an antipathy against Arabs and Muslims and making it more fashionable for people to not be so sympathtic vis-a-vis the Palestinians who received a lot of sympathy in the 1980s. Netanyahu finds sympathy for the Palestinians and their political aspirations a danger to his party's programme.

But this is circumstantial thinking. Some say Israel benefitted; therefore Israel must have had something to do with it.

I disagree with the "Look-who-benefitted-to-discover-who-did-it" line of reasoning. For one thing, not all results or consequences are intended results or consequences. People, politicians, govts are not so masterly in control of world or even national affairs as the conspiracy theorists' worldview holds. No room for contingent agency in such a worldview. And Catman might have modified his comment and said something more like this: conspiracy theorists will now believe themselves more justified in claiming what they claim re: 9/11.

As far as the American academe goes, most if not all American academics thoroughly and actively hate Israel. I even know one who calls it "the country that cannot be named." Nothing will change that.

We were attacked because of the money and weapons we give Israel. Paul Wolfowitz, Douglas Feith, George Tenet, Elliott Abrams and other Jewish traitors to America are bankrupting us in Iraq and now they even want us to fight Iran for them after Israel's military couldn't stay in the ring for even five weeks with 3000 Lebanese part-time militiamen trained by Iran.

Al Qaeda and Israel are both partially responsible for the current epidemic of Americans losing their homes. And bin Laden and Netanyahu are both talking about how good it is that the Arab-Israeli conflict has spread to America.

F' Arab terrorists and F' Israel.

What Al Qaeda fights for :

Quote:
al-Qa'ida (The Base)
Qaedat al-Jihad
Islamic Army for the Liberation of the Holy Places
World Islamic Front for Jihad Against Jews and Crusaders
Islamic Salvation Foundation
Usama bin Laden Network

Al-Qa'ida is multi-national, with members from numerous countries and with a worldwide presence. Senior leaders in the organization are also senior leaders in other terrorist organizations, including those designated by the Department of State as foreign terrorist organizations, such as the Egyptian al-Gama'at al-Islamiyya and the Egyptian al-Jihad. Al-Qa'ida seeks a global radicalization of existing Islamic groups and the creation of radical Islamic groups where none exist.

Al-Qa'ida supports Muslim fighters in Afghanistan, Bosnia, Chechnya, Tajikistan, Somalia, Yemen, and Kosovo. It also trains members of terrorist organizations from such diverse countries as the Philippines, Algeria, and Eritrea.

Al-Qa'ida's goal is to "unite all Muslims and to establish a government which follows the rule of the Caliphs." Bin Laden has stated that the only way to establish the Caliphate is by force. Al-Qa'ida's goal, therefore, is to overthrow nearly all Muslim governments, which are viewed as corrupt, to drive Western influence from those countries, and eventually to abolish state boundaries.

Description

Established by Usama Bin Ladin in the late 1980s to bring together Arabs who fought in Afghanistan against the Soviet Union. Helped finance, recruit, transport, and train Sunni Islamic extremists for the Afghan resistance. Current goal is to establish a pan-Islamic Caliphate throughout the world by working with allied Islamic extremist groups to overthrow regimes it deems Non-Islamic?and expelling Westerners and non-Muslims from Muslim countries particularly Saudi Arabia. Issued statement under banner of the World Islamic Front for Jihad Against the Jews and Crusaders?in February 1998, saying it was the duty of all Muslims to kill US citizens civilian or militaryand their allies everywhere. Merged with Egyptian Islamic Jihad (Al-Jihad) in June 2001.

Sometimes, all you have is circumstantial evidence. While it may not be enough to prove to courtroom standards (i.e. it remains "plausibly deniable"), when you have enough of it (and I am NOT saying there is yet to blame Israel; OTOH, it shoudl not come as a total surprise if there is), it is hard to conclude otherwise. If it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it's a duck.

I think you are right about this, but then why are so many hesitant to put their names to pro-Palestinian actions?

And yet, despite all the evidence your group claims to have collected, it is ALL circumstantial. You have no cold hard facts that would lead to Bush's impeachment or anything along those lines. One would think that the lack of such evidence time and time again would make any rational person give up.

One would think that the lack of such evidence time and time again would make any rational person give up.

'My' group? WTF are you talking about? I came here by myself.

But since you brought it up, a 2007 poll showed between 39 and 45% of Americans favored impeachment of Bush, but that goes up in certain areas,e.g. 75% of the residents of Stockbridge, Mass. signed a petition to impeach Bush and presented it to their Rep. Olver who refused to introduce Articles of Impeachment because of the real possibility that Bush would declare martial law and cancel the election.

And you are right that I have no cold and hard facts to impeach Bush - except for these:

As you read through the following evidence, please bear in mind a couple of key points.

1. We didn't need any of it, or any of the previous year's evidence. We've had enough solid evidence for a 5-minute slam-dunk (than you, George) impeachment for years now. Here are the highlights: http://afterdowningstreet.org/keydocuments

2. While none of this is about sex, and all good impeachments simply must be about sex, we have learned in recent years of CIA prostitute parties and Halliburton gang rapes. And if that's not enough to convince you that something is rotten in the state of the Homeland, we learned in 2007 that (quick, cover your children's eyes) . . . "Bush Promised to Kiss Blair's Ass."

TURNING GOVERNMENT AGENCIES INTO REPUBLICAN PARTY MACHINE

This was the big new story of 2007, and Congress does get some credit for stirring the dirt on this one. It turns out that most of the executive branch of the government now works for the Republican party. U.S. attorneys who had failed to grasp that fact were fired. Emails that exposed it were destroyed. State governors who got in the way became political prisoners. And an intellectually challenged Attorney General who could take orders but not remember what he'd had for breakfast was scared out of town after committing perjury on television. His bosses laughed and replaced him with a clone. Congress complied.

Not that Congress wasn't very, very concerned. In fact, Rep. Henry Waxman alone destroyed a forest writing letters to the White House and publishing reports like this one:
http://oversight.house.gov/documents/20070618105243.pdf

By the end of 2007 I saw an editorial cartoon in the paper with holiday lights on the White House spelling out: "No Comment: Ongoing Investigation." A man in the cartoon commented: "They just leave them up all year now." These were some of the choice headlines from 2007 on the your-tax-dollars-pay-for-the-Republican-Party theme:

IRAQ LIES: NEW EVIDENCE

This is such fertile ground that although no more evidence is needed, it just keeps piling up. In fact, some of the old evidence is being buried In 2007 the White House deleted from its website the old claims by Cheney that Iraqis would welcome an occupation "as liberators" and so forth.

The closest Congress came to touching the topic was a brief Senate committee hearing on a report on the Pentagon written by... the Pentagon. Even that report was fairly damning:
