I always hear people complaining about how Linux is too hard or too much trouble, but I just installed Mandriva recently and I wanted to show everyone how well it works without any tweaking so I made this video:

Not super exciting or anything, but you can see it's easily more feature rich than XP, faster than Vista, and this particular distro seems to "just work." I'd definitely recommend giving it a try.

P.S.
Install took less than half an hour, most of which was waiting for the hard drive to get partitioned. I was browsing the internet and watching scrubs all through the install.

Install that Mandriva on a laptop.

Also, try doing simple things like changing the resolution to wide screen.

Essentially, Linux is not mature enough to be a serious O/S and it has nothing on windows other than being free.

I've dabbled with Linux several times in the past few years. The first time I tried it was about maybe 9 years ago, and it was crap--good security=30 hours to get a sound card working.

I tried it again 4 years ago when I was still using a genuine XP copy that no longer would register with my re-install. I decided to pay Mandrake (now Mandriva) instead of Microsoft. It was ok, but still too hard to do simple tasks.

But, I must say, the video that you posted is nothing like what I used in the past. It looks amazing. While I'm happy with Vista, I want to try Linux again. Thanks for the vid.

You are still more likely to have hardware problems with linux of course, but compatibility has gotten a lot better. I'd recommend trying openSUSE or Mandriva, both of which are pretty polished, and I think odds are quite good that one (or both) of them will run without any hiccups.

The only thing that looks good about that OS is the spinning cube desktop, but it's only a matter of time before a Windows version appears. I'm using Vista 64 Ultimate and I have had no problems at all.

My first Linux was the SLS distribution on
floppy disks. I think that was 17 years ago.

It still isn't ready for prime time.

Good luck connecting to a Korean bank with it.

Linux is like a new beer. You give it a try and maybe you really like it. However, you always go back to the tried and true.

True, but they're way behind compiz and compiz is being updated constantly. One was boasting of "4 different effects!" (apparently other windows versions have less?).

To put that in perspective, I think compiz has close to 40 plugins right now, with another 10-15 usable but not "finalized." (The vast majority of those plugins each represent a different "effect.")

If you have no peripherials and don't plan on running any relevant software then Linux is great. It's also great if you happen to have the small percentage of hardware that there are drivers for.

Ubuntu was awesome. Installed it on a Samsung Sens P28 no problem, all hardware working. Far more stable and secure than any Windows system I'd run before or since.

I did miss some audio apps that I could no longer run and Linux is still generally weak in the recording department. Though the audio apps I covet in Windows I didn't exactly pay for either...
