Torching cop cars, assualt, looting...
Ooh hoo the playoffs started. But just started, jee if I was inclined to turn over cop cars I'd at least have the good sense to wait until the third round.
Interesting sociological discussion on why fans go nuts when the team WINS rather than loses. Gotta like English footie fans who go ballistic BEFORE the match. Booze of course is the main reason. You drink more when your side wins.
But Jesus what's next---rioting when you squeek into the playoffs?
Come on Montreal---riot if and when you win the Cup. |

The habs need it bad. They won the cup at least twice a decade until the nineties. Now it's been 15 years. |

It wasn't Habs fans. Montreal has some punks and trouble makers who will use the cover of celebrating a win for the city to steal and cause mayhem. It was people taking advantage of legitimate fans. That's what I understand. |

I disagree. Montreal has a fine tradition of rioting during and after hockey games. And not just for hockey.

I was downtown for the last ones in '93 & '94.

They won the first round. Big, effing deal. That's no reason to riot. Particularly when they had to go to game 7 with the 8th place team. Either winning this series will be their rallying point or a sign of trouble they'll have with better teams. Either way, i'm hoping for a Pens/Habs series at some point int he playoffs. |

From what I understand from what the police said, some people took advantage of the other fans being there, so they could steal, and it happens. I think the same thing happened when Serbians were rioting in the Balkans and these women were caught on camera stealing TVs. People who are not really fans will use the cover of the crowds to steal.
I am not saying drunk fans won't go nuts and cause damage, they will, and they have, but some from what the police said from what I read were using the cover of the fans to break the law. |

It's a very, very old slur. A bit like grandmothers who call any Italians "DPs". Another very very old slur.
Right, long time ago Coke ruled the shelves of the grocery store. It was a very pricey drink. Pepsi came along and to get market share priced themselves cheaper. It become that rich people drank Coke and poor people drank Pepsi. French Canadians were long screwed out of cush government and corporate jobs and were an underclass. So they drank a lot of Pepsi. So like Americans would make fun of black people by referencing watermelon and fried chicken, English Canada would make fun of French Canadians by calling them Pepsi drinkers or just "pepsis". Yes, it's a very offensive term to people of a certain generation. Maybe even today. For the record I am half French Canadian and grew up in Montreal. Can a half black person call himself nigga? A half jew call himself "*beep*"?
DP is another funny one my pepsi grandmother would apply to the Italians in her neighborhood. DP stands for "displaced person". The DP designation was given to WWII refugees who had no ID, no home, and were brought over to Canada. Their designation was "DP" and it stuck as an insult. |

$500,000 in damages, and 16 police cars and 10 businesses damaged. That's not just a small group of troublemakers taking advantage of a celebration. |
