While in City Hall I held a Tibetan Flag. I was screamed at. (Ok...say what you will...Freedom of Speech is great)
"F U" "One China" "Tibet Is Ours" "F>>> TIBET"
I responded, saying that I like China and only want peace for all of the people in China and Tibet. This, of course, had no effect.
Then my flag was torn from my Korean girlfriend hands, then mine.
I had another. again the screaming...hundreds of Chinese students surrounded me and screamed terrible things.
Then the kicks and punches. My face was cut.
THe police that were standing next to us were gone.
Soon blood was running down my face. I pushed my girlfreind into a nearby hotel and barely got in myself. There were at least a hundred Chinese people at our throats. The police provided no assistance. thank god we were next to a hotel, which did what they could to stop them. We ran and ran and heard Chinese, who really wanted to hurt us, following behind. We found safety on the 16th floor.
Finally the police and KBS came, long after it all started. I went to the hospital to check the gash in my face.
I was there to support Tibet. To support peace. I don't hate China.
I was truly amazed about how poorly the Chinese acted. When hundreds of protesters come at you...there really is nothing you can do. I feel guilty for not staying, but when you girlfriend's safety is at stake, you have to leave. Thousands of people were there carrying Chinese flags...is it so wrong to come and carry one in support of Tibet?
THe actions and violence of these students does nothing more than mobilize a movement against them and the violence of their government.

I truly hope the other foreigners who were there are safe.
I'm ok after my short visit to the ER. It could have been much worse.

Amazed? Why? What kind of reception did you expect? Honestly, what were you expecting?

I'm so glad that China has the Olympics. The best part is the torch run around the world to highlight exactly why China should never have been given the Olympics.

I somewhat sympathized with you till you said this. I was at City Hall today, and you'd have had to be a fool to be waving a Tibet flag in that crowd.
Really, who did you think your audience was?

Pretty brave of you to stand against the mob.
However, there are more effective ways to get your point across than to wave a flag at a torch run.
You gotta hit 'em where it hurts- in the wallet.

Unbelievable. Nationalism at is most silly and ugly. And I was just upset at having protesters having their flags taken away. Rolling Eyes

Serioulsy where the fuck do these chinese students/visitors get the balls to physically attack peaceful protesters in democratic societies? Blows my mind. I hope the korean cops take into custody all those involved and deport their asses back to china.

They op's original point that there was a gnashing of the teeth of ugly totalitarian nationalism breathing fire down the neck of those who made the simple mistake of not being Chinese was not a representation of the events of today for me, my friends and hundreds of other of Westerners there.

The Chinese had no right to behave in the manner they did. Demonstrating is ok for everyone. Physically assulting people for demonstrating a view different from yours is awful. The Chinese were just out of line....period. I am getting more and more tired of the Chinese by the day. They had no right to assult the other peaceful protesters. The world is not only theirs...it is one world and China is part of it. They don't own it and can't stop people from saying what they want yet.
