"The war was madness. I realise now what I did and will come back to say sorry.

"I was afraid the British would be very angry but I find that now they are very gentle."

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/news/news.html?in_article_id=547269&in_page_id=1770

By Contrast:

"Japanese survivors of the world's first nuclear attack on Hiroshima voiced regret that the American pilot of the plane that dropped the bomb died without saying sorry.

Paul Warfield Tibbets, Jr, whose B-29 bomber dubbed the Enola Gay dropped the 9,000-pound "Little Boy" bomb on August 6, 1945, died on Thursday at his home in Columbus, Ohio. He was 92.

Tibbets never expressed regret for the bombing that led to the end of World War II but at a horrific price: 140,000 dead immediately and 80,000 other Japanese succumbing in the aftermath"

Have any brits apologized for bombing Berlin? Do they need to? If you're attacked and faced with an all out war by the aggressor, I don't think you need to apologize for fighting back. To suggest anything else is stupid. I'll tell you what Julius. When your nation is attacked and you strap yourself into a plane and fight an enemy you know will spare you not a single mercy should you be captured, I'll THEN listen to your opinions on who should be personally apologizing for what.

What a cracker.

It's been over 50 years since the war ended. It's time to let it go, and this pilot obviously felt the need to apologize.
Did he knew what he was doing was wrong then when he was flying the German bomber? Perhaps he did.

Sure, at time of war you do what has to be done. And no, they don't fundamentally need to. Do you "need" to help a disabled person cross a busy street?

But 50+ years later when all is at peace and you are neariing the deathbed, saying a couple of simple words should not be that difficult, if it helps soothe thousands of the living.

Looking at those pictures its clear to me who dies the happier and better man.

I'm rather certain there are many photos of him with a smile on his face. Geez. This is a lame argument.

Judging by your own comment, sounds like you haven't done much research on the topic yourself. Wink
