"The war was madness. I realise now what I did and will come back to say sorry.

"I was afraid the British would be very angry but I find that now they are very gentle."

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/news/news.html?in_article_id=547269&in_page_id=1770

By Contrast:

"Japanese survivors of the world's first nuclear attack on Hiroshima voiced regret that the American pilot of the plane that dropped the bomb died without saying sorry.

Paul Warfield Tibbets, Jr, whose B-29 bomber dubbed the Enola Gay dropped the 9,000-pound "Little Boy" bomb on August 6, 1945, died on Thursday at his home in Columbus, Ohio. He was 92.

Tibbets never expressed regret for the bombing that led to the end of World War II but at a horrific price: 140,000 dead immediately and 80,000 other Japanese succumbing in the aftermath"

Have any brits apologized for bombing Berlin? Do they need to? If you're attacked and faced with an all out war by the aggressor, I don't think you need to apologize for fighting back. To suggest anything else is stupid. I'll tell you what Julius. When your nation is attacked and you strap yourself into a plane and fight an enemy you know will spare you not a single mercy should you be captured, I'll THEN listen to your opinions on who should be personally apologizing for what.

What a cracker.

It's been over 50 years since the war ended. It's time to let it go, and this pilot obviously felt the need to apologize.
Did he knew what he was doing was wrong then when he was flying the German bomber? Perhaps he did.

Sure, at time of war you do what has to be done. And no, they don't fundamentally need to. Do you "need" to help a disabled person cross a busy street?

But 50+ years later when all is at peace and you are neariing the deathbed, saying a couple of simple words should not be that difficult, if it helps soothe thousands of the living.

Looking at those pictures its clear to me who dies the happier and better man.

I'm rather certain there are many photos of him with a smile on his face. Geez. This is a lame argument.

Or you could address the point.

Judging by your own comment, sounds like you haven't done much research on the topic yourself. Wink

Thirded.

Has anyone seen the Kurosawa movie Rhapsody in August? Did anyone else find it interesting that it focuses exclusively on the Nagasaki bombing, and doesn't mention Hiroshima?

I always thought it was because the bombing of Nagasaki was unnecessary, and Kurosawa wanted to focus on that tragedy, rather than the first bombing.

If our criteria for "when bomb" is the number of dead vs. not bombing, then we might be able to make a good claim that the first atomic bomb dropped was justified in that it killed less than otherwise would have been killed.

The second bomb cannot be defended, in my opinion.

Says you. But you weren't there, were you? That's why I never pay attention to most of the people that write their opinions on these forums. Most of you love to spout off your opinions about everything and anything, but 99% of you have never known and will never know what it's like to be baptized by fire.

Thanks for that positive contribution. What was the inspiration for that mini-rant?
