I am sure that this is the right road.
Few people are aware that 1883 is an important year in the history of the Korean press.
What is the purpose of "that" in these sentences? I think the first sounds more natural without it, but the second doesn't?

That I should know this, I am sure: I am sure (that) I should know this. But I don't.
At first I was going to say it's a relative pronoun, but of course it isn't because it's not relating anything to a noun. Then I thought maybe it should be called a conjunction since it connects two clauses: but that doesn't seem right.
I know that with 'to be sure' and 'to be aware', functioning in the same way as 'to know', 'that' indicates the object of the verb is a clause rather than a noun; but what the grammatical term for it is I do not know. Hope someone else does. |

[b]Tres peu de gens savent que l'annee 1883 a ete une annee importante dans l'histoire de la press en coree.
For 200 years the official language of England was French. Thus, French had a strong influence on the evolution of English. In this case, "that" is optional; however, in French you must have the "que". |

I took a course in effective communication, It said that we should avoid using "that" or "which" whenever possible. Even if it means we have to make two sentences. |
