I had beers Friday night with a group of Chinese students, and we got pretty drunk, and I finally popped the question: What will the world be like in five hundred years. There were 4 students from China, and three of them were quiet, but this one told me straight, CHINA will be the world, in Asia. He did not say the whole world, he predicted that there would still be seperated places like the Americas and Europe, but he did say that Asia would belong to China. I asked him about Korea, and he told me that he predicted north korea would be used by China to kill their brothers in the south, and that would leave room for the Chinese to come down. Makes me wonder.

probably this post will be moved but all the same, I'll venture an answer and say it's not going to take 500 years.
China is just waiting for the U.S. to move on and out. I think they absolutely love K's present state of total denial and ignorance while the populace frolics in their neuvo wealth status of arrogant capitalistic nonchalance. It just makes it that much easier to plan their absorption into China's mainland.
yep, no doubt at all. |

Both the US and China are begging for oil, there will be a huge clash of cultures and military power............
In 500 years I doubt either will exist as we use the word now.

However, if China continues its 'research' into the Northeast Project, it would be easy to assume that China would successfully claim North Korea (by means of 'historical evidence' of cultural ties). And seeing how the North is as belligerent as it is, it will surely be annihilated in the next Korean conflict. After which China would step in as a 'moral peacekeeper', which the UN and EU wouldn't object to and because of such clout China is developing in the international stage, the US would be helpless to voice an opinion in the UN against such a move.....
Also, if China does reclaim Taiwan, it would most certainly intervene on behalf of other Chinese minorities in South Asian nations as Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand (they might even be seen as rasing claims to northern Vietnam and the Spratley Islands as they did in the late-70's- early 80's).......
Also they could lay claim to parts of eastern Afghanistan (on 'behalf' of the Uighur population there) and lets not mention that a third of Kashmir is under Chinese control (which is something you will never hear about in the news because of the ruthless tactics the PSB and the PLA use against minorities in those regions of the country and the tight media control the CCP exerts over China).
China is becoming the newest imperialist player of the 21st Century asides from the US and Russia, however seeing that much of the world is going into economic recession, China will be left with more cash to throw around to keep 'interested countries' under its influence.......... |

What a load of BS.
Those worried about Chinese Imperialsim manifesting itself in new Chinese territories based on historical claims are woefully misinformed.
China is not expansionist and they never have been. Despite their regional dominance in the past, they were content to make vassal states of neighbouring countries, such as Korea.
Modern China will do this economically - other Asian nations have nothing to fear.
As for Taiwan, as China becomes more prosperous, the Taiwanese will vote to join them. It won't be long.
China deosn't need to use military force to dominate Asia this time. |

Then how did they get control of Manchuria, Inner Mongolia, Singkiang and Tibet? Wouldn't it be more accurate to say that China was always a land empire that expanded as far as the technology of the day conveniently allowed? |

All of those territories fall within the traditional bondaries of China. China had the power and wealth to expand, but never did, beyond these tradtitonal boundaries.
This is because of there "big brother" philosophy, where they preferred to control neighbouring countries through a mutually benefical vassal state system. China would benefit economically in exchange for military protection.
China was not only a land empire, and during the Ming Dynasty they assembled a massive fleet which sailed as far as Africa, attempting to continue their tribute system along the way. They never attempted to colonise other places, and if they had, the world would be a very diferent place.
I see no reason for modern China to have a different attitude. After all, they are the Middle Kingdom, and have no need to expand their borders. |

He said to the architect, "Don't disturb that tree over there because I had my first bit of sex under that tree!"
"How sentimental of you Mr. Lloyd," replied the architect, "That very tree huh?"
"Yep, that's right," continued Mr Lloyd, "And don't damage that tree on the other side because that's where her mother stood and watched me have my first bit of sex with her daughter!"
"What?" replied the architect, "Her mother just stood there and watched you have your way with her daughter?"
"Yep," said Mr Lloyd, "she sure did!"
"But Mr Lloyd," said the architect, "didn't she say anything?"
"Yes she sure as hell did," smiled Mr Lloyd, "She said BAAAAAAAAAA!"

A man and his wife were driving through Wales on their holidays when they suddenly saw a sign that said "Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch".
The husband attempts to say it, but his wife starts laughing and soon this turns into a argument, so much so that they decide to pull into the nearest motorway restaurant.
Finishing their meal, the wife can't help but question the waitress. "Excuse me miss," asked the wife, "but can you settle an argument between my husband and me? Can you pronounce the name of where we are, but very slowly please."
The cashier looks at the woman funny and says, "Sure, you are in Liiiiittttttllllleeeee Chhhhhheeeeefffff!"
15)
Two Welshmen were rounding up their sheep when one of the ewes suddenly ran into a fence and got it's head stuck. The two men ran over to the fence and one of them said to the other, "Hey, boyo, this is too good an opportunity to pass up!"
The man unzipped his trousers, yanked out his cock and fucked the ewe for ten minutes until he finally came inside it. After he finished he looked at his friend and said, "That was bloody marvellous, mate. D'you fancy a go then?"
"Bloody right I do!" replied the other man, as he unzipped his trousers and stuck his head through the fence.

One day a travelling salesman was driving around rural Wales and decided to stay the night in a farmhouse. After enjoying a fine meal with the farmer, the salesman turned to him and said, "What is it like for hiring a companion for the evening?"
"Well," replied the farmer, "I'm afraid there are not many women around these parts. But there's always Arthur........."
"Oh?" said the salesman, intrigued, "How much does he charge then?"
"It will cost you 100." replied the farmer.
The salesman thought for a minute then said, "That's a bit expensive!"
"Well," said the farmer, "the local magistrate takes out 40 because he doesn't approve of those kind of things."
"Oh," answered the man, "so that's 40 for the magistrate and 60 for Arthur."
The farmer shook his head, "No, the local constable also takes 40 because he doesn't approve of those kind of things!"
"Jesus," replied the salesman, "So the magistrate gets 40, the cop gets 40 that only leaves 20 for Arthur! Thats no way to make a living!"
The farmer shook his head again and said, "No - We pay Gareth and Dai 10 each to hold Arthur down, because he doesn't approve of that sort of thing either!"

One day a man walked into a pub in Wales and ordered a pint of beer. All the other men in the bar looked at him and the barman asked, "You're not from around here, are you sir?"
"No," replied the man, "I am from London."
"So, boyo," said the barman, "What do you do for a living then?"
"I'm a taxidermist." replied the man.
"A taxidermist?" asked the barman, "What's one of them then?"
"Well," replied the man, "I mount animals."
The barman then turned to all the other welshmen in the bar and said, "It's ok lad's, he's one of us!"

Has this Chinese student got his hands on official government white papers? Not really worth getting worked up by a few throw away remarks from some pock faced drunken red guard wannabee. This all sounds a bit like hysterical hearsay.
Of course China was expansionist to a certain extent. Thats why Sichuan is called Western China even though its slap bang in the middle. Nothing compared to Western countries though. Mainly because the main focus has been keeping the stabilty in its own borders which has constantly proved difficult enough. Same problems today. Cannot see any evidence that China is launching some pan-Asian offensive. Would be interested to see any articles that prove otherwise though. |

Economic expansionism is now in vogue. Why physically take over territory when you can economically control the people who live there instead? It's much more profitable and it comes without the 'moral' baggage. |

I live in China right now, and I'm not so sure what to think. I think on the whole China is not a very expansionist power. What remains to be seen is whether or not the current group in power (you might have heard of the "Shanghai group" or something like that) are really that different from the crazies that invaded central Asia decades back.
For my money, there's a lot to be said about the "Middle Kingdom" idea that you guys were joking about. I can really see China as becoming more of a central hub connecting the rest of the region economically, and perhaps to some degree culturally. |
