Yes, sanitary conditions in rural areas are very lacking.
The worst single thing I ever observed was a huge metal bowl filled with syringes and glass tubes which were used for blood work with hot water from the tap running over them in a men's bathroom at the No.1 hospital in Zhaotong, in the mountains of northeast Yunnan Province in 2004. Yes, they planned to reuse them again.
Death toll now at 15,000.

| I think czarjorge was referring to the 3 gorges dam, downstream of Chongqing. It wasn't affected by the quake. But if the dams in the quake zone collapse, that may threaten the 3 gorges dam 400 km or so downstream. |
