Big Bird:

Yes, sanitary conditions in rural areas are very lacking.

The worst single thing I ever observed was a huge metal bowl filled with syringes and glass tubes which were used for blood work with hot water from the tap running over them in a men's bathroom at the No.1 hospital in Zhaotong, in the mountains of northeast Yunnan Province in 2004. Yes, they planned to reuse them again.

Death toll now at 15,000.

Chris_J2:

Thanks for the heads-up; I dearly hope you are wrong, though.

The photos of mothers holding their dead children is almost more than I can bear.

The heads up was well deserved, Mr Hawaii 5-0! I'm hoping that the press release of 60,000 missing I quoted from, is wrong, too. I've been to China 6 times, & visited the earthquake memorial in Tianjin last year. Have also been to Chengdu in 2002. Those were happier times.

It could have been worse had it hit the dam.

Chinese troops have rushed to plug "extremely dangerous" cracks in a dam wall, upriver from the earthquake-devastated town of Dujiangyan.

I think czarjorge was referring to the 3 gorges dam, downstream of Chongqing. It wasn't affected by the quake. But if the dams in the quake zone collapse, that may threaten the 3 gorges dam 400 km or so downstream.
