Or since you are in Korea you could stop being so cheap and lazy and pay the 1-2,000 won rental fee...

I can understand downloading western flicks while in Korea, but it is faster to just pay and get a good quality dvd at the rental place then d!ck around looking for subbed korean flicks on the net.

Except that the ones at th rental place are not subbed.

Try "Winter, Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter."

Anything by Lee Chang Dong and Hong Sang Soo is worth a look. Especially The Day A Pig Fell Into the Well, Peppermint Candy and Oasis.

Also, Memories of Murder, Memento Mori, Once Upon a Time in High School, Friend, Host, My Sassy Girl, Secret Sunshine.... I could go on and on..

You've hit the mother lode. Korea is one of the world's great, yet largely unrecognised, film making nations.

Please Teach Me English (2003) was pretty good, and very appropriate for the EFL teaching crowd.

Here's a trailer for it:

You can even see it on Youtube, albeit in low-res. Here are the parts to it:

The "English subtitles" part is the tough part.

The "You no say yes, maybe, why are you lightbulb?" stuff is pretty bad.

My favorites are "My Sassy Girl" and "Classic". We just saw "once upon a time in Korea" and it was good.
I also enjoyed "My wife is a gangster" , just the first 2.

On a subtitle note, most DVD's you can rent have the option for English subtitles. Look on the back of the display box, on the bottom it should list available languages.
"My Sassy Girl" has the best subtitles ever! The often subtitled facial expressions! And at one point there is a gun fight with machine guns, and the subtitle says "Sound of guns firing.Bang bang." Too much fun!

I watched My Sassy Girl after reading a thread on daves where people were saying how awesome it was. Big mistake on my part, the safest way to describe it is irritating.

Same goes for Welcome to Dongmakgol though that one is worth watching if you are new to Korea just because it has a good insight into the Korean mindset... though the white guy in that movie seems like an english teacher they pulled of the street...why do they always do that?

I did enjoy 'Save the Green Planet' and the 'Oldboy' vengeance trilogy though that goes without saying.

PS while we are on the subject does anyone have any invites for that 'avistaz' asian movie torrents site? If someone could send me an invite i would be incredibly thankful and could always send you one for the 'thebox.bz' British TV site if thats your thing???

Lee Na Young is gorgeous. She's one of the few major stars who's never had plastic surgery, and she actually seems to be quite a good actress.

(She's the same girl you see in the Iope adverts)

You are My Sunshine: Is about a simple farmer who falls in love with a
coffee girl. She quickly learns that there is more to life than earning the short time fee from customers. Unfortuantly she ends up back in the buisness shortly after they marry. The movie has a tragic twist and their love is comprimised.

I can't remember exactly... the name was Korean.

What's the name of their national wrestling sport?

"(wrestling) can make you a real woman too!" Or something like that.

Anyone know the name of the movie?

It's about a boy who wants to be a woman, and the only way to get the money for the trans-gender surgery is to enter a wrestling competition.

if u like ur emotions manipulated, marathon and hello/goodbye brother(?) sorry i dunno what they call that in english either, it's the one about a little boy with cancer (안녕 형아).
