Currently trying to apply for a public school job through Korvia but have not yet submitted the application. I need two points of clarification and would greatly appreciate it if anyone could help.
1. Salary. Korvia sent me this scale:

Have (A) a Teacher's certificate for elementary or secondary School; or (B) a TESOL/TEFL certificate (min. 100 hrs.); or (C) a Master's degree; or (D) a Bachelor's degree with at least one year of teaching experience at accredited institution
Lvl. 3 Teacher : 2.0M
Have a Bachelor's degree, but no experience or certification as outline above |
But this scale is on the ETIS website:

And someone else on the board said he got 2.2 at a public school with no experience and no certification (which also describes me. My wife, who is also applying, has 3yr experience but no certification). What is a reasonable amount to expect to make at a public school? Is it negotiable or does it change depending on the particular location?
2. How to apply.
A lot of people seem to like Korvia and they seem to be pretty on the ball so far, but I've also read on the board that it might be best to apply directly to SMOE through ETIS. Others have said to ask a public school teacher to PM to get a job directly through SMOE. I'm starting to get frustrated with recruiters as I've already been blatantly lied to, and would rather work around them if possible. I'm concerned particularly with whether it will be easier to get higher pay by going with a recruiter. Any thoughts?

1) The scale on the website is correct. And you will not make 2.2 with no experience with SMOE. If you have no experience or certification, you will start at the lowest (1.
2) You MUST apply through a recruiter. You CANNOT apply through SMOE directly. You can also only use one recruiter. Using multiple recruiters will result in your application in being rejected by SMOE. |

Looks like Korvia sent you the GEPIK levels instead of SMOE.
AT SMOE you may find you and your wife are at the following pay levels:
Level H: 1.8 million won per month ( You )
Level G: 2.0 million won per month ( your wife )
You can expect some overtime but it cannot be guarranteed.
These salaries are not negotiable and do not change according to location within SMOE and Seoul. |

You should both consider knocking down a quickie TEFL certificate, you'll bump your salaries quite nicely from it. |

Yes, the salary levels KorVia sent you are for Gepik. Just ask Joyce to send you the SMOE scale.
You can make 2.2 mill with no experience if you go for Gepik. If they place you in a "designated rural area", and you have a TEFL certificate or equivalent, then that's no problem. |

Yes. Make sure is a 100 or more course, even an online one like ITTT TEFL. You can also submit your certificate to SMOE during your term of employment. Your next month's salary will be increased from then on. |

It would bump him 200,000 a month. He would go from a 1.8 level H to a 2.0 level G. His wife would be placed at 2.3.
If I'm reading it right between em they'd be pulling down an extra 500,000 a month. That's a pretty good return considering some of those 100 hour certs would only set you back a few hundred bucks per person.
You're sorta right, it does bump 100,000 unless you're new to ESL'ing, then you get the 200,000 bump. Either way well worth it IMO. |

If you want to avoid recruiters and don't have your heart set on Seoul, Gangwon-do might be a good option.

A lot of the province is rural but if you are coming with your wife their couples jobs might be a good choice or you may be able to get schools in the same city. |

The recruiters that work for SMOE are some of the best (as far as recruiters can be, I guess). There are complaints from time to time, but apply to a SMOE job is pretty cut and dry for the recruiters and applicants. They can't promise you things that aren't in the SMOE contract, and the SMOE contract doesn't change.
Many recruiters are bad because they lie and mislead applicants, wedging them into jobs the applicants may not have otherwise taken. The SMOE recruiters simply do the collection of CVs, initial screening of applicants and answer questions about the job. SMOE decides who to use, so it is not in the long-run favor a recruiter to lie about SMOE jobs. SMOE has already been informed of some problems and takes them into consideration when using future recruiters. |

Honestly, the ETIS program is growing every year and it is common to hear that SMOE doesn't fill all the positions. While there are teachers who enter the program straight out of university with a non-English or non-education related degree, SMOE likes to hire people in the field or with teaching experience. It is common to have people who worked in a hogwan before coming to SMOE.
But for numbers, I don't know. Maybe Ben Glickman or ddeubel will pop in here. |

Karincosme, basically it works out like this. Base is 2mil (lvl3). 2.1 mill if you have a TEFL (lvl2) and to get to level 3, you need to have a TEFL and 2 years experience. So anyone who is fresh out of Uni with a TEFL will be getting 2.1 and if you are placed in a designated rural area (they can be pretty hit and miss in GEPIK) that's an extra 100,000 making 2.2mill. |
