"Your" is a possessive.
* Your desk is dirty.
* Your mother wears army boots.
* Your mink coat looks suspiciously like a cat skin.
You're = you are
* You're beginning to annoy me.
* You're the apple of my eye.
* You're a sheep molesting Antipodean (the difference being Aussies rape sheep whereas Kiwis seduce them)
There
* The car is over there, by the tree.
* There are too many pedantic nerds on this website.
"Their" is a possessive
* Koreans are very proud of their distinct 4 seasons
* They are disappointed with their President
* The children played with their kitten in the garden
They're = they are
* They're not impressed with her grammar.
* They're amused by her opinion about smoking.
and my personal favourites....
"Its" is a possessive
* The cat used its litter box.
* A robot must never harm its creator.
It's = it is
* It's very muggy today.
* It's amazing what some people will waste their time with on the internet.
* I like bokbunja. It's my favourite Korean alcohol.

People don't generally make those mistakes from lack of knowledge. Its just a sort of typo. (yeah, I did it). Mistakes like "definate", on the other hand... |

your stupid!
What? my stupid? My stupid what?
I beg to differ though. I don't think they are generally typos. I think many people are completely unaware of these distinctions and just choose there 'they're' arbitrarily. Looking at you, nolegirl |

You don't need an apostrophe to make a noun plural. Apples = apple's
It's = it + is
Its = indicates possession by 'it' |

That's actually everywhere on the internet. Never understood how people got that one wrong so often. The others I can see, but not 'looser.' |

I'm entirely aware of the rules, they're not hard, but I make those mistakes all the time. I think it is because I tend to hear myself saying my thoughts in my head (if that makes sense) before I write them down. So I'll make phonetic errors like "write" for "right" and such. I tend to catch the big ones, but "your" and "their" are not words that you focus on, so they slip by.
I'm sure somebody's done studies on the reasons why people make certain typos. There's definitely a difference between carelessness and ignorance. Generally, other people's errors are due to ignorance and mine are due to carelessness. |

What's that quote - everyone driving faster than me is a maniac; everyone driving slower is an idiot. |

While we are at it, I can't stand people misspelling "lose" or "loser" as "loose" and "looser". |

Bookmarked.
Please add "Hear hear!" versus "Here here!" |

Redundant request since I've clearly added it myself.
How about a contest to make a plausible sentence or paragraph that includes all mistakes mentioned so far? Could be used in class for a quiz. |

I don't know about that. The carelessness excuse. It wouldn't matter if I had just downed a bottle of whiskey with a crackpipe chaser while watching ultra-porn, on acid........... I still wouldn't confuse, they're, their and there. They are just three completely different words to me. I see it as like typing 'bananas' when you meant to type, 'steering wheel'.
Sorry, but I think the typo excuse is rediculous! |

It has nothing to do with carelessness. It has to do with laziness. While some people simply don't know the difference, most simply don't care enough to make the effort. I truly believe they're just too lazy to use more of their brain.

There are even more examples of this in Korean. Especially when texting, emailing, foruming and chatting online they make so many intended shortcuts, shortened words, dropped particles and other oddities that sometimes I don't even know what I'm reading - then a while later I figure it out. I hate that kind of writing style in English too, but it's a nightmare in Korean when you aren't familiar with everything. King Sejong must be turning in his grave! |
