It's no secret that Spain is a racist country.
These are the same people who throw bananas at black soccer players and chant nigger everytime a black player touches the ball. Even against there own teams players. |
Oh yeah, let's not forget the racist Korean TV skit where the actors painted their faces black a couple of years ago. Anyone got a link to that?
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=YNKO7E7BBKM
So it's perfectly OK when Koreans (or Asians) act this way, but when anyone else does something perceived to be racist, everyone suddenly comes out of the woodwork to complain..got it.
To quote Peppermint:

the standard textbooks for sixth grade English class in Korea featured a lesson on "where are you from?"
The CD rom that came with it had a cartoon skit:
Kid in a hanbok: " I'm from Korea!"Razz
kid in a top hat and tails: " I'm from England!" Confused
kid in a cowboy costume: " I'm from America!" Confused
kid in a loincloth and a bone through his nose: " I'm from Africa!" Shocked
This was in use in 2006, though I've heard they're working on replacing that text. I taught the lesson, but refused to show that clip from cd rom |

Yeah, okay, its racist. But its not the same class as racism which ends up with a certain class persecuted and dead.
This was simply in extremely poor taste. They should apologize, and we should all move on. |

Please point out where I've said it is OK for South Korea to do these things. I merely pointed out how Spain treats certain black soccer players.
Christ you people on Daves are so pathetic. You complain about "apologists" people who always bring up "well the West does it!"
And then you come at me with this?
Not once on here have I said, oh its ok for Korea to be racist but not other countries.

It's racist if it's deliberately demeaning or it plays upon a negative stereotype.
The only way the photo can be racist is if:
a. Having narrow eyes is a negative stereotype in the mind of Chinese
b. The team intended to demean Chinese people
I don't think having narrow eyes makes a Chinese man feel diminished. It remains to be seen if the team intended to demean Chinese people and context is important here. |
I think posing in such a way came from a place of deep ignorance. Trying to rationalize and/or justify the intent behind the picture doesn't make it any less offensive. Also, I can't imagine in what context parodying "Chinese eyes" would be deemed acceptable. |

Those people !!!
I can't see how they can rationalize hateful mockery? They must think they are better.
Growing up, combating that type of hatred and racism was what I liked. I was a bit of a bully then. Anyone who looked sideways was beaten |

anyone seen this? This time against a South American

regarding the picture, if these players were in black face for the next world cup, it would be a much bigger deal but to me it is the same thing.......perhaps they can ask the advice of the fans?

Honestly, I think they thought they were being cute. Not just from what they say about the 'affectionate gesture' but from the expressions and smiles in the picture - those are not smiles of malice or ridicule.
I guess they were oblivious to the high level of sensitivity in the anglophone world - and probably in Northern Europe too? (I can't imagine the Germans, Dutch, or even French doing this). Coming from a Brit or American etc this gesture could only be interpreted as intentionally racist, but the Spanish probably didn't know it would be taken that way. That makes them 'backward' in a way but we shouldn't be too harsh in our condemnations. Let the Chinese slam them for it if they want - but the Chinese don't seem bothered.
Ironically, the Chinese seem much more sensitive to Western criticisms on their human rights records and on cheating at the Olympics, and react with almost as much outrage as if we had collectively pulled our eyes into slits at them. |

I am African American and i have been to Spain. I would have to say they are pretty ignorant to these things. i was never called anything except by a little kid that said in Spanish that i was ugly, fat and black as if i couldn't understand simple Spanish. But it was a kid.
What was bad was most of the souvenir's stores and some regular stores i went into had figurines of big lipped, dark black people typically depicted being lazy, eating watermelon or smoking pot. So i'm not surprised that they did it and that they probably see nothing wrong with. I fail to see what the point was and if it was meant to be funny, it was not.
Was what they did racist, well it depends on what your definition of racism is, which seems to be what most you posters are talking about. But is certain is that is was done in poor taste and ignorance. |

all the finest entertainers are willing to work in Black Face. and probably the funniest was actually Eddie Murphy, who worked in WHITE face!
It was a Sat. Night Live mini-movie where he was in White makeup, and got to see New York from a Caucasian perspective. He even saw how easy it is to get money at a Bank if your not from that race that never pays their loans back.
And don't hate on Spain too much. If not for their work in the middle ages, Europe would be crawling with Muslims, instead of being dumb and letting them in during the late 20th century. El Cid bought Europe a century or four! Besides, they learned their lesson. Team USA and their negros really showed them who's boss, at least on the Chink court. |
