| [piggyback] How much better is the dual-core E8400 3GHz compared to the P4? Don't tell me it's twice as bloody fast! |
Well I haven't looked these up, but I've heard that a 2.0ghz centrino is equivalent to a nearly 4.0ghz P4, and the Core 2 architecture is 20-30% faster clock for clock. 2x1.3=2.6 so by those numbers it would be 2.6 times as fast for normal applications, 5.2 times if you were running a program that was perfectly multithreaded. Plus, the e8400 can overclock from 3.0 to nearly 4.5ghz with the right setup. At $170 it's pretty much the steal of the decade CPU-wise.
*disclaimer: those base numbers could be way off*
P.S.
Eamo, it's even more drastic. Read my response to tfunk's post. |

Well the a64 was faster the the p4 by about 10-15% and the Core2 is aboutt 20-30 faster then a64..
P4 is a slug compared to it.. My laptop butchers my desktop |

| Ok, well by those numbers it would only a max of 1.5 times faster. That does sound a little more reasonable I suppose. I'm tempted to look up all the specs now. |

I just picked up PC Builder magazine and these are the specs they recommend for a bang-for-buck gaming machine:
Case
Coolmaster Cosmos 1000 $200
Motherboard
NVIDIA nForce 780i $250
CPU
Intel Q9300 2.5GHz Quad $270
RAM
2GB Corsair PC85000 DDR2 $100
VIDEO CARD
NVIDIA GeForce 9800GTX $300
Power Supply
Antec TruePower Quattro 850 Watt $200
CPU fan $65
Zalman 9700NT
Hard drive
Western digital 500GB SE16 SATA $90
Optical Drive
Lite-On 20X SATA DVD R/W $25
Total $1500
The power supply looks pretty pricey. |
I don't know when that was written, but if it was before the HD4xxx came out, I can understand a bit. That is NOT a bang-for-buck system, more like an OC system as eamo said. That system does not even need an 850-watt PSU, it's overkill.
You could easily find a cheaper case, a P45 MOBO, switch to an HD4850, a Zalman PSU, and up it to 4GB of OCZ/Corsair PC-6400 RAM and save $4000 or so and have a much BETTER system. |

What is an "Nvidia -Intel" mobo? An nVidia chipset for an Intel processor? If so, I agree agree completely. The only reason I can see going with an nVidia chipset is if you're dead-set on using an nVidia video card. Even then, unless you really want to do SLI, I'd still stay away. |

Well, to be honest I don't know much about computers. The magazine says 'summer 2008', so it could have been written May/June for all I know.
The case at $200 seems ridiculous. The only way they seem to justify it is that it has levers for quick and easy access.
The magazine doesn't go into any detail about it's recommended decisions (I might have to hunt through the magazine for that).
Before I bought the magazine I based my purchasing decisions on two factors: GHz processor number and RAM number. I wasn't too sure about the whole dual/quad core thingy, the Intel/Pentium thingy.
Now I understand the principle behind the L2 cache, DDR2 RAM, spin cycle speeds for hard disks, have a basic appreciation for the dual core processor but beyond that not much..
It looks like the OP bagged a very good deal by all accounts. On a related note, is it possible/feasible to build your own laptop in Korea? |
