Compared to New Zealand, where it's believed there were absolutely no people before about 1000 years ago, the human history of the Korean peninsula is incredibly long and complicated. But just how long do you think it is? |

I said 60, because you asked about Korea. If you have asked about the Korean people, it would have been much longer. |

Good point.
Anyway, who knows? Really. Korean people can't even agree upon this. It seems there is no consensus among them. Everyone throws out a different number depending on their age and where they're from in Korea (and depending on how many drinks they've had and how intense their patriotism is at a particular moment). |

Flawed poll, so I won't vote.
4333 years ago or so was Dangun. Even though it's full of shit, it is the first 'recognized' part of their history. But people here can't count. |

I'll give them the 5,000. There doesn't seem to be much of even a mythological history/memory beyond that, and things do grow more solid from then on, albeit slowly.
Of course, we can complicate things by asking if we're talking about a Korean race or a Korean nation, and whose ideas of race and/or nation. That isn't much fun though. |

The correct answer will always be: older than China.
My question: In 3,000 5,000 or 100,000 years of history, what exactly are the great accomplishments? I realize that according to the OECD, Koreans are very inefficient, but 5,000 years ought to be enough time to do more than create Hangeul, which contributes nothing to the rest of humanity. How can you be proud of 5,000 years of nothing? |

You can't have history until you have writing. When are the first dated references to Korea? Anything before that is pre-history. Legends, folk tales and archeological finds tell you a lot, but they are not history. |

Oh that's right. He was in the 50th year of that one legendary mythic Chinese ruler traditionally said to have ruled around that time.
4341 years it is. |

Korean history was apparently set according to Chinese history. The Chinese claim 5000.. so... thats pretty much it.

Don't forget the Japanese interrupted big time half way through and big brother China was always looking over their shoulders. |

Korea is exactly one year, two months and fourteen days old. That's the day I came here.
How should I know if Korea existed before that? I wasn't here. I didn't see it.
Is anyone actually here? or is it just me... |

Anyway, ignoring all the hocus pocus about having sex with bears and all that, I think a good starting date for Korea would be 57 BC with the founding of the Kingdom of Shilla. So I believe Korea is 2064 years old.
Here is some information on the founding of Shilla:
