Not a huge gripe here, just trying to gain some understanding.
I completed a recognized TEFL course last semester. I did get some value from the course but I'm still confused about what good it did financially. (I thought that EPIK teachers would get a $100/mo pay increase for completing it.)
I'm now a Level 2, up from Level 3, but without the course I would have moved up a level anyway just by virtue of having a Bachelor's degree and one year's experience. My new salary is at the bottom of the Level 2 range. As I see it I make the exact same salary that I would have made without the course. Anyone have any experience in this area? |

GEPIK here, though may be similar.
I can't recall the payscales right now, but I was advised to do a course to increase my first year pay prior to starting.
A 100-hour course (completed during my first month) put me from 2.0 onto 2.1 for 11 months of my first year.
This year I changed school, so I didn't get the 'non-compulsary' monthly increase of 100K. Still on 2.1, but I believe that next year I should go onto 2.3 because Gepik recognize 2 years experience.
Sorry no help on EPIK is it? |

OP perhaps the reason is that under GEPIK you can only go up in salary one level per year..
ergo... from 2.0, Bachelor's Degree level... the next year you will go up to 2.1 because you have a year's experience.
should you do a TEFL in that initial year, it won't help you financially.
Essentially, it only really helps you if you come in initially with it... you start at 2.1. rather than 2.0 |

TTompatz, where did you pull this contract statement from? I just started with EPIK a couple of weeks ago and this is not in my contract.
I would love a raise! I found out from other EPIK folks that their recruiters encouraged them to do a 100-hour certificate and now they are making an extra 200,000/mo. Does anyone have experience working for EPIK and getting a raise mid-contract? Who do I contact about this? My co-teacher? My EPIK regional office contact person? I don't want to start it if it won't go into effect until the next contract, as I'm not sure if I'll stick around but if I could finish by the end of the year, that's an extra 800k-1600k to play around with. |

Likely depends on your province.
Gangwondo doesnt offer mid-contract level adjustments. |

We've had that issue come up in the past 2 podcasts on www.themidnightrunner.com . Tob55, who has KEI-TEFL and a gov't approved online MA/Ph.D school in Korea, brought it up near the end of the F-5-9 podcast. I also heard the same from Bittitybob on the public school/univ. podcast. By the way, bitty... over 100 downloads in the first 36 hours of your podcast. Not bad. |

And if you are already at Level 1 when you complete your TESOL, you'll get no increase either. |

OP: which online TEFL course did you complete? Did you discuss with your school beforehand about completing this course in regards to a mid-contract pay-raise? |

OP. Without an MA, a teaching certificate, or a TEFL, you cannot become a level 1 in EPIK. That's where the value is....besides helping you become a better teacher of course. |

I believe TTompatz is quoting from the GEPIK contract.
With EPIC however, you need another year's experience to move up to level 2+. |

The powers that be are interested in keeping up appearances - having a foreign teacher in the classroom is the priority; providing incentives for those teachers to develop professionally is not.
If you take the initiative to improve yourself as a teacher, more power to you. Your current employer isn't going to pay you for it though. |

Then my next question is: Is the degree recognized by anyone reputable outside of Korea? I'd be dubious of doing an online Korean degree. |
