Considering selling my D40 to get cash for an upgrade.
How much would you pay for a D40 body, 18-55m lens, 1GB card, and extra battery? |

A kit? No more than 300-350,000W.
I have a D40 with Katzeye installed, and that will go for about 400,000W (but that's because of the katzeye). |

Not a bad deal.
For those considering the "used" route, you could buy the OP's used camera for 300-350,000, and use the other 100-150,000 for another lens or some other gear like a battery grip, or a nice bag, or a carbon fiber tripod. Or an 8GB SD card for 25,000W!
However, used equipment can be great or it can be in terrible shape. Make sure you try before you buy. |

Where abouts in Yongsan? And are you talking about the D40 or D40x?
I'm going to be heading down there in the next week or so to buy the D40 or D40x. Haven't decided yet...
Thanks |

Hey Tim,
Have you gone to buy your camera yet? I'm in the exact same boat as you... Looking to purchase a D40.
Where can we find better deals, Namdaemun or Yongsan?

Namdaemun. Yongsan will always rip you off if you go alone. My Korean friends don't recommend it.
Check out SuperDave's guide to buying camera gear in Korea. He's got a post of it somewhere on ESL cafe.
I have a D40, and I'm having plenty of fun with my katzeye/manual focus combo. I highly recommend it, even used. I bought mine as a Factory Demo from Ebay. It's served me well so far. And it cost me much less than a new one. |

OT, but do you have a photo page anywhere? I'd love to see what kind of shots you've taken with that combo. |

What's a katzeye? Do you recommend it for newbies? Oh, and what's OP? |

1. OP = original post
2. a katzeye is a focusing screen. there is a screen inside all dslr cameras, but there are no markings on it to assist with manual focusing. the katzeye is exactly this - a focusing screen, with markings, to assist in manual focusing.
all older slr cameras came with them installed, especially before autofocus was developed. my leica has a focusing screen.
you don't really need one unless you're into macro photography (where autofocusing is difficult and inaccurate) or you like using older lenses which have no autofocus capability.
actually, if you own a D40 and want to use older lenses, since the D40 has no focus motor pin, then a focusing screen may be handy ... generally though, it's simply not needed by 95% of dslr photographers.
hey awesomeA, good luck selling the camera!
cheers

| AwesomeA, is yours still available? How long have you had it? I might consider buying it used. |

Totally true. If you are used to AF and prefer it, then a katzeye is a luxury. If you are used to manual focus lenses (i.e. non-AF), and prefer that, then a katzeye is indispensable.
I love manual focus lenses, because of their sharpness & speed to cost ratio. Mega sharp and super fast for very little money (often a fraction of their original value). Here's a good article from the NY Times about crazy people who do this:
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/09/11/technology/personaltech/11basics.html?pagewanted=1&_r=3
I learned photography by using non-AF lenses on a Nikon FM. That's why I prefer those lenses--that and the cost. |
