As the first native teacher my school has had, I'd naturally be open to doing the after school classes which they've never done before(i believe anyway).

Anyone have any advice or previous experience being the first to start a program....

Also, what about pay....my coteacher mentioned it was the standard $20 extra an hour and would count as overtime....however I've heard of a few people getting paid more than that or they received a cut of the profits from the program. Is everyone just getting the bare minimum $20 an hour or is there a way to get more?

I taught an after school class for 1 hour a day for a month. I got the standard 20,000 won and it was strictly voluntary on my part. It wasn't overtime for me and I wasn't going to push it since I only taught 17 hours a week as it was. [/i]

It's not "overtime" as we think of it.

You are supposed to get a supplemental pay of 20k won per class (usually 40 minutes long for elementary - assuming it happens within your 8:30-4:30 workday). If you are working high school and doing 50 minute classes you can ask for 25k per class.

AFTER / outside of your regular school hours (8:30-4:30) it is negotiable and you can feel free to say no or negotiate other terms (but get it in writing).

It's not a great salary but you might still get paid even if many lessons are cancelled - that could boost it closer to 30,000 with enough cancellations.

Just remember that these kids will be tired. They're at the end of phase one of yet another crappy day in their crappy lives and even the good ones often won't be very alert. Make it clear that they have to do some real work, but try to make your class something for them to look forward to, as well.

first native as well. It was optional and i'll still be finished by 3 o'clock so I said yes. 20k per class. 2 classes. If it's after 430, negotiate for higher pay.

Mine were canceled constantly and it was a pain because if it was canceled, it would just have to be taught at a different time. It took forever to finish a cycle and get paid for it.

For those doing after school programs. How long does each class last? My school mentioned it last semester and then never came back to me about it. At the time they did say that each class would last 1 1/2 hrs which i remember thinking was too long for both the teacher and students. I think 40 mins to 1 hour is ideal.

I just started mine. Mine are 50 long minutes for 30,000 won. The problem with these late afternoon classes is students want to leave instead of being at school so they don't listen like they do in regular school classes. I'm having difficulty with them refusing to take off their backpack and stay a while as well as anarchy. Even with a Korean teacher present, they won't listen and just talk and go nutz. They climb around on everything and won't listen to anyone or anything. They won't even watch a video or sing a song that they normally would like. They just want to leave school.

What in the world do you do with an after school class?
