CBS HAD a huge propaganda machine around Kimbo.
It was only a matter of time. |

| I've never really been on the Kimbo bandwagon.....though I never thought that he'd go down so easily. |

| This looked like a thrown fight. Not that I'm in any way a Kimbo fan, I have seen him take much harder shots to the chin, and without gloves. Then once he was down, the commentator was saying "power punches" but they didin't even connect... Lame, lame, lame! |

Actually, it was reminiscent of the second Muhammad Ali - Sonny Liston fight.
In a K-1 match in Japan (back in 2004) the same guy - Seth Petrucelli - did almost the same thing to Bob Sapp (over 150 lbs. bigger than Kimbo) with the same kind of karate-like punch that dropped the big gorilla in the first round. (Seth lost that one, though, after a straight right to his arm dislocated his elbow or something, and it was stopped - though he wanted to continue...)

I happened to hear an interview with Petrocelli a couple weeks ago (on www.betweentheropes.com) when he was still scheduled to just fight on the undercard, and he was cracking jokes like a stand-up comic.
After his big upset, he appeared on a popular local radio talk show in Orlando and made controversial remarks to the effect that he had been paid extra by the organizers to stand and trade punches with Kimbo - rather than take it to the mat (where he had more experience as an amateur wrestler.)
When that was picked up by national media he more-or-less retracted his remarks ...

I agree. Not a single one of those punches landed flush. Can't even call them punches. It was more like flailing his arms next to Kimbo's head. |

I can't think of any reason for the fight to have been fixed to that result - unless UFC was somehow behind it. It practically finishes the whole EliteXL promotion (which is about 58 million dollars in debt...)
Petrucelli even said that he didn't catch him flush, but I think he demonstrated against Bob Sapp that he does have a big punch.
It could be that Kimbo on his own realized that his basic flaws would be exposed soon so he decided to check out early rather than risk serious injury.
Reportedly, he insisted on getting a bonus when the change in opponent was made close to fight time.
The latest edition of www.betweentheropes.com features another live interview with Petrocelli made today - which I haven't heard yet. |

| I can't get it to link up, but there is a video story about this on FoxNews. They're calling it a sort of mess. See www.foxnews.com |
