In Gyeongsangnam-do, 5% of a public school GET's Overall Evaluation (yearly) is based on:
Attendance record - sick leave, unpaid leave, tardy

Just because something (sick leave, unpaid leave for death of a parent/child or to get married) is provided for in the contract does not mean there are no consequences to using it.

5%...wow!

Seriously though, how does it work? I'd imagine if you took 2 or so sick days a year it might cost you 1% Which isn't the end of the world. Even if you lose the whole 5% because you were regularly tardy, took all 15 sick days (being spotted at the beach once or twice) and had 3 parents die and took the compassionate leave, it is still only 5% and wouldn't make or break a halfway decent teacher.

There should also be some reward for having an excellent attendence record.

Personally, I work for GEPIK and in my 4th contact at the same school and have yet to take a sick day. Probably cause I teach the after school program as well. Simple fact is...if you take sick days you won't be respected. Up to you... Laughing

Yes, I agree 5% for sick days, unpaid leave and tardness (combined) is not going to have much of an effect either way on a half decent teacher.

However, unlike back home, taking sick days does have consequences - and there's no shop steward.

Yeah attendance does count for something in Seoul as well. However, most schools would rather keep their decent teacher than get bent over a few sick days. If the kids and staff like the teacher then I`m sure the principal has the authority to over ride any stipulation.

Neither have I. My annual evaluation consists of whether the principal wants me to stay on for another year.

That's BS. I took 12 days of SL and they still begged me to resign.

Yeah, just what is this "overall evaluation" you speak of? I thought pay was determined on an objective fixed scale and the principal would whimisically decide to renue your contract or not based on his own preferences.

When respect equals hefty yearly pay raises sign me up for the no sick day contest.

Attendence is considered for most jobs.

I'd prefer working somewhere that appreciates it is better for me to use a contractual sick day rather than coming to work sick as a dog and being a "team player".

Taking unnecessary sick days because you feel u aren't being compensated enough is childish, IMHO. I get a 100,000 bump every year even though I'm already making between 4 ~ 5 mill per month.
