I was in the store (Lotte) this weekend and amid the usual blaring garbage music came a Korean hyper technopop version of Stars and Stripes Forever, or at least half of the song was.

I don't know whether they thought they could plagiarize it without being noticed, or whether they had turned it into some sort of anti-American sneer song. There were words, and whatever they were, the music and presentation certainly was not respectful.

This is a piece of music about America's national flag, and one of the most important national pieces of music, next to our national anthem.
Quote:

"Stars and Stripes Forever" is a patriotic American march widely considered to be the magnum opus of composer John Philip Sousa. By act of Congress, it is the National March of the United States of America.[1]

How would you like it if an American rock group turned Arirang into some blaring piece with electric guitars and played it in a strip joint, Korea? You wouldn't, would you? You would probably recall your ambassador to the U.S., and protesters across Korea would burn American flags.

Korea, if you want to be respected by other countries, how about acting respectful to other countries? This piece of music is an insult.

How is it different from sampling or mixing it, or doing whatever DJs do to songs? Also, Stars and Stripes is old enough to be in public domain, so what they're doing certainly isn't illegal.

Also, are you going to let some anti-American slight get to you? For as long as anyone could remember, people from around the world have riffed on Americans, so you develop a thick skin when it comes to stuff like this. No big deal.

Oh. There's the "R" word again. What an idiotic reason to call someone a racist. Not that I don't agree that this is a non-issue.

Do you follow me? Huh? Huh? Huh? Can you?

Personally, I would not get offended if I heard it.

For several reasons:
1) an American DJ may have made it...

2) Their intention wasn't to insult. People don't regard their own craft as degrading. Their goal was to make music from sampling and in fact they thought the song was good enough to be used as remix. If anything they like the song and hold it in regard.

3) Stars and Stripes is significant, but not a symbol like the anthem is.

4) Even if it was a Korean, it was one individual who made the song. It's one individual. He/she doesn't represent all Koreans. If an American DJ did the same thing, obviously not all Americans would feel the same way as that DJ.

5) People aren't really all that PC or aware of things that might be insulting. I give them the benefit of the doubt. I don't exactly see Americans being flabergasted if we had a remix of the Korean national Anthem... Let alone even aware of what it sounds like.

There's many more reasons I wouldn't be offended. But the fact is you are offended. But don't let it bother you. How many Koreans even know what it is? Could you even blame them? How many of us can claim we know the English, French, German, Anthems? They aren't intending to be offensive. So give them a little room for ignorance.

Didn't catch that. Still, it's just a username and the use of it doesn't necessarily mean anything. And you're pretty quick to call people racist. His post wasn't racist. I don't think you even know the meaning of the word.

Samd comes from the "if you don't agree with someone, automatically call the person a racist so they're put on the defensive and don't actually make you support your attack" school of debate. Take NOTHING he says seriously.

Oh, and I think the OP is less angry about the use of the song, so much as the hypocrisy of the situation. Any tiny mention of Korea in a negative way gets people smashing buses and attacking embassies, yet they're allowed to do the same thing to other nations and think nothing of it.

Yes, it's hypocritical, but we don't have to act like they would act.

And, do we even know if the intent of the song was to slander the USA, or is the sampling just a cheap gimmick like most of the rest of their music contains?

Meh, Pachabel's been constantly rolling in his grave since Korea got a hold of his canon. Not that it's a particularly inspiring piece of music to begin with.

Why are you providing context? That's racist.

Korea's national anthem has, in the past, been sung to the tune of God Save the Queen and Scotland the Brave. Once something is more than 100 years old it is public domain and no longer under copyright.

Ah Scotticus, I love it how you appear out of nowhere to attack my posts.

I have called Gollwog a racist in the past, and will continue to do so until he is banned or leaves the forum. I have also refered to threads or posts in general racist, but apart from that, I don't think I have ever come out and said "You're a racist" to anyone on this board.

Feel free to go through my post history and prove me wrong. It's funny though, that whenever I challenge you to do this, you never reply.

yingwenlaoshi, his post wasn't racist, but he is a racist troll. Hence my initial post.
