I'm curious. This practice is the norm in western culture. But most people do it mostly because most people do it. There is little evidence that it has any medical benefit; there is much evidence that it reduces sexual pleasure. Other than that, why do it? Only so the male child will fit in with the other kids?

Ladies, have you opinions on the aesthetic implications?

Circumcision was routinely done in my province because of documented lesser rates of infections.

The practice seems fairly sick and bizarre - yet more evidence of the hatred of males in our culture. As to doing it to reduce the chances of infection, even if true, this is a bit like having your feet amputated to prevent trench foot or doing radical mastectomies on girls to prevent breast cancer.

I think most of what people think they know of male circumcision is hearsay. It's still a *beep*...frankly, it's a what a *beep* is supposed to be like. It might have been more hygienic a few hundred years ago, but now that we all have access to showers, I don't see how it's any less hygienic. As far as pleasure...I'm not sure how anyone would be able to say that as fact. Pleasure is very subjective.

Un-circumcised men do not prematurely ejaculate a lot. Come on... Boys tearing their foreskins? Where do you find this info? The only difference I've noticed is that one *beep* is wearing a turtleneck.

I don't thin it's a common 'western' thing...more of a North American thing perhaps. I'm a woman, and I don't think I'd circumcise my son. I don't really see why it's necessary. It seems pretty scary as well. If he were to grow up wanting to be circumcised that's his prerogative...I think it's wrong to force children to have irreversible procedures.

Circumcision is meant to be more sanitary as bacteria easily develop under the foreskin leading to infection should it not be kept clean regularly. This is what Americans have claimed, but I'm sure man lived for thousands of years with foreskin. It very well might had been a health problem for those not adequately cleaning it.

I know the USA has been doing it for many years, what other countries practice circumcision?

Well, the point is that, if one day I have a son, I will have a choice to make. Just want to be well educated on this one. It came up in a conversaton the other day, and it left me thinking a bit.

My understanding is that it reduces sexual sensation by as much as 50%, since it damages many nerve endings. In addition, men lose more sensation as they get older because of the constant friction against clothing. Having a foreskin would prevent this.

As for it being irreversible, that is not true. There are both natural and surgical ways of reversing it. The natural way has to do with using weights and stretching the skin over time, almost like a heavy earring would do to your lobe. This method is said to increase sexual pleasure significantly.

I think that this is a bit radical. I just wonder what kind of choice a well-informed father would make. I'd want my boy to have, well, the set of tools that will best serve him. I don't want to make the choice on superstition, conformity to an unquestioned practice, or for being uninformed.

I've heard a couple of girls from out east say they'd never have sex with the Quebec boys because they weren't circumsized. But I thought there must be something else behind it.

For giving head, a circumsized guy is better, uncircumsized is a little gross. Sex wise it doesn't matter. (Personal opinion here).

And when I have my son I'll ask the professionals what they think about it and then make the decision.

Yea men have lived thousands of years with foreskin! They also went months with out washing there butt too. They women probably didn't smell well either. When you have a son and you bathing him pulling that skin back is a bit weird and you gotta do it for a while because the little suckers won't think to do it. Desensitize is true but if that's all you know you can't tell the difference.

I know some people that are not and that's all they know so they can't judge. It's your preference.

Kids often forget to wash behind their ears as well. Perhaps you could cut them off while your at it.
