Liberals voice concerns about Obama

Liberals are growing increasingly nervous and some just flat-out angry that President-elect Barack Obama seems to be stiffing them on Cabinet jobs and policy choices.
Obama has reversed pledges to immediately repeal tax cuts for the wealthy and take on Big Oil. Hes hedged his call for a quick drawdown in Iraq. And hes stocking his White House with anything but stalwarts of the left.
Now some are shedding a reluctance to puncture the liberal euphoria at being rid of President George W. Bush to say, in effect, that the new boss looks like the old boss.
He has confirmed what our suspicions were by surrounding himself with a centrist to right cabinet. But we do hope that before it's all over we can get at least one authentic progressive appointment, said Tim Carpenter, national director of the Progressive Democrats of America.
OpenLeft blogger Chris Bowers went so far as to issue this plaintive plea: Isn't there ever a point when we can get an actual Democratic administration.............

First he is "not Gandhi." Now he is not even "a Democrat."
Beautiful. And as predictable as clockwork, too... |

Obama's keeping Robert Gates around. Obama's VP and Sec of State are Iraq war supporters. And Obama's keeping the Bush tax cuts. But I especially like his fancy "office of the President-elect" placards on his podium when he talks on the news. Makes him look super official! |

What the hell is a 'liberal' anyways? Can someone define one in a very CONSISTENT nature?
I know the definition, but the word is thrown around way too much as a catch-all.
During Bush's 8 years, it basically meant anyone who didn't agree with Bush 100%.
In this post, it seems to have a very narrow definition, like 'far, far left'. |

Fundamentally? Well, liberalism rather than liberal per se, which is much harder to define as it is shaped by our own individual, historic and cultural values etc, is the subscription to the idea of rule by rules rather than rule by men (socialism, conservatism). Put another way, the contraction of state institutions (men) and the expansion of market forces (rules) through which individuals can achieve their aims.
However, given the state of the US/global economy at the moment, it makes sense that Obama sees state intervention as being the best means through which to sort out some of the problems. I'll leave it to you to decide whether this is the best approach or not. |

Every left of center America I know is happy as a pig in shit with Obama. They love him. Even the right wing people I know are excited. He is actually treating his job seriously and makes it obvious. Sure, you're going to have some imprudent moveon types that want utopia now but screw them. |

Exactly. This is the way-far-out-(man)-in-left-field crowd throwing a hissy because Obama didn't appoint Wavy Gravy to a high-ranking cabinet position. |
